Good day everyone.

Few days ago I saw in Humble Store Final Fantasy XIII had been released on PC. I haven't played a Final Fantasy game for any years and I think maybe it could be a good chance since the game is on sale for 6,49 euros. My questions are: is it a good game? How is the story, music, characters? Do it worth?

I do this questions because I've heard it's a extremely linear game, but this point is not necessary a bad point for me if it has a worth story to tell me in change. The last Final Fantasy game for me was X in ps2 ( I've play VII, VIII, XIX, and X).

I don't like specially jrpgs or anime style but Final Fantasy saga were my first incursion with some kind or rpg before know other rpg games and I'd like to remind old times so I'd like to hear what you think about FFXIII.

Another point, a friend told me he bought VII and VIII PC version and he needed to register a Square Enix account. I'm not a fan of DRM and I hate to create a SE account since Steam it required . FFXIII need this SE account too?

It'd be great have classics Final Fantasy here on GOG someday :)

Thanks you very much in advance.

No, it's not a good game. I could list you a ton of reasons why but I'm too lazy for that. Just know you can safely skip it, and nothing of value will be lost.
It's a game where the mythology necessary to understand the ending isn't actually revealed until later games in the series (instead shoehorning in meaningless character drama at every opportunity), so the game's ending is basically "and it all worked out because magic." On top of that, there are long, plodding sections of nothingness and some ugly difficulty spikes.

The characters are atrocious, too. Someone loses faith that they'll succeed every half hour or so, only to get a sickeningly saccharine "hope and friendship" talk that wears off, again, after a half hour. Hope and Snow are likely to make you want to kill something small and fuzzy. Even worse, most of the game is spent without an actual villain. One pops up midway through the game, but is unceremoniously killed off in a cutscene before a much less memorable villain shows up.

It's just a horribly written game in every possible way, and I loved FF8, so that's coming from someone whose tolerance for nonsensical plot twists is pretty high.
FFXIII is a crap of a game. Pile of flat characters in a linear and boring plot inside a badly explained universe. That's pretty much everything major that describes this and many more similar JRPGs. And anime. Yeah.
no !

if you want a pc final fantasy game buy 3 4 7 or 8 any of them
but avoid ff 13 is garbage its the pits
its completley and utterly linear it doesnt even pretend its not all you do is walk in a direct straight line and press a button once in a while

the game does almost everything for you

the charcters are lifelesss and annoying
and the story is so feeble a dead gnat would be bored by it

save your money
save your hd space
save you tolerance and patience too and get ff 4 7 or 8
I bought it on a whim last year, didn't know anything about the game, never read any reviews. I played it for three hours and found absolutely no redeeming qualities in it.

it looks pretty !

thats about it i guess
i bought the pc version in the hopes that mdoders could fix that almighty mess
The game is inferior to Final Fantasy VII and Final Fantasy IX in my eyes. But the only person who can truly answer your question is YOU. So I recommend you watch some let's play videos and then decide by yourself.

Perhaps it was. I mean, that is one thing that Final Fantasy games are known for. And maybe it's just because I saw so little of the game, but the limited areas that I saw were just so uninteresting I don't recall being impressed by the visuals.

What I mostly remember, however, was the gameplay, which was exactly as you described it.
FF13 is a horrible game. The worst in the series*, by a significant margin. Even including the NES FF2, which is a distant second. (I played a friend's console copy all the way through, minus a few of the end-game side quests, of which there are few. There is nothing redeeming about the game.)

Avoid it for that.

It's also horribly laden with DRM.

Avoid it for that.

*: I'm not sure on 13-2, and 13-3. But from what I've seen, 13-2 is more of the same, except boss battles are turned into quick-time-events. As for 13-3 Lightning Returns? I didn't bother finding any information. When the first two sucked so badly...

I don't even agree with that. It's at least 6 different completely unrelated art styles mashed together.

I haven't played XIII yet, but as you can see generally it isn't well liked. From what I could gather over the years the game is hyper linear (quite literally, you just walk in an enormous endless corridor, this can be seen in many videos, no need to play it) until roughly 20-25 hours in, when it opens up. Then again, X, which is also hyper linear,is a lot more liked since the story is much better. Characters and story in XIII are also criticized commonly.
On the up side, the combat system is often described as fun and strategic.

What I can tell you is, don't let the hate on XIII put you off the Final Fantasy series as a whole. The games are almost completely unrelated (different characters, settings and even different gameplay mechanics), having only a few common things (magic spells, summons, themes, chocobos) and in general are quite good (unless you just hate JRPGs).

Also, XII (12) was also hated a lot back when it was released by rabid FF fanboys who couldn't fathom a FF game without random battles. Nowadays I often see it referenced as a personal favorite of many gamers. Myself included, XII is my favorite FF game (a very close second is VI), though admittedly, I haven't played a huge amount of them.

Right now, on PC, only III, IV, VII, VIII and XIII are available. Coincidently, of these I've only played VII for a bit (I've played VI, X, X-2 and XII). However, VII is by far the most recommended of those 5, so I'm guessing it would be a good one for you to try.

Other than those I can safely recommend VI, X and XII to you.
Of these, X is the most linear but strikes a good balance between gameplay and story (which is great).
XII has a slightly worse story, but still good imo, but is a lot more open and has a lot more sidequests (there are a number of entire maps with only sidequests). I even missed a few areas right at the beginning on my first play-through).
VI is a lot older, with sprite-based graphics but the gameplay is good and the story is the best of the bunch.
X-2 has a great combat system but the story is ****.

EDIT: Completely missed that you had already played X and VII.

Also, in order to check if the game requires an SE account just go to the steam store page for the game and check the system requirements part or the PC gaming Wiki, which has info for DRM for most PC games.

The story is bad, the gameplay consist only in fighting. No exploration at all, excluding Grand Pulse in the end of the game, but even here you can only fight, fight, fight. The game is a big corridor, there are no cities, no NPC to interact with, no minigames, nothing.
It's not a BAD game per se, but it's not a great game either. It's something I bought for $7.50 and it was worth that. But to me, not much more. I put maybe 15 hours into it, but couldn't finish it. And Durante's GeDoSaTo is necessary for the screen resolution fix.
Honestly i enjoyed FF-13... Mind you it is VERY linear as others have said. Spoony however rips the game apart and just gets annoyed at it because the explanations for the purpose of the entire game don't work. Example: The FalCie can't talk to humans and can only give vague images of what they want done... Yet one of the main badguys who is a FalCie talks in perfect english...

The game also artificially limits you so you can't grow beyond a certain level unless you beat a boss and continue to the next section which ensures you won't be stronger than the level they want or weaker than they want either. Course if you fail, it just backtracks you just outside the battle so you can try again or avoid it...

If you don't work your brain too hard and just want to veg out, then it's probably an okay game, otherwise if you want strategy or character growth or something, it's not a good game.

As for the others... FF13-2 is better than 13, but time traveling and paradox plots are confusing. 13-3, i quit and couldn't finish, just annoyed the hell out of me and right at the end too...

SE fixed this in a patch.
