G'evening everyone, I joined the site just recently and, after trying everything for a while, felt like sharing my thoughts and impressions with GOG so far. For various reasons I never had much interest in digital distribution services in the past and did what I could to avoid any form of online-DRM. I would just buy old fashioned retail game boxes, install the games and start playing -- that is, until some genius had the brilliant idea that even those physical games should be linked to Steam. Nowadays boxed games without Steam requirements or some similar DRM/online service are almost non-existent, so at some point I gave in and decided to give Steam a try. To cut the story short, it was nothing but a headache and waste of time ( and money ).

Not sure how exactly I ended up here. I must have heard of GOG a few times in the past, but never really checked it out until now. Well, I'm glad I did. I can honestly say my experience with GOG so far has been the exact opposite of my short-lived little adventure with Steam.

I really like the site design, the varied selection of games, the fair ( or downright cheap ) pricing, the minimalistic ( small ) and functional download manager... The entire process, from game selection, to payment, download and installation is really smooth and straight-forward. Didn't really encounter any difficulties at all, and now I can enjoy the games I downloaded so far. It's almost like back in the old days, when you didn't have to worry about exotic DRM measures. You just bought your game and had a good time with it, whenever and as often as you wanted. ( But I suppose that's the key concept to Good Old Gaming. )

Anyway, just wanted to say "Hello" and give my thanks to the team at GOG. Keep up the good work, and I look forward to many good old ( and new ) games in the future.

( And while I'm at it: Thanks for the Witcher series, as well. Don't know just how closely related GOG and CD Projekt are, but in any case, I really enjoyed the first two, and here's hoping the third one will also turn out to be an excellent ( exceptional? ) game. Cheers! )
Welcome. :) Make yourself comfortable, enjoy the games, and check out the community. :)

Regarding GOG and CD Projekt: They are sister companies - separate companies, separate personnel, but same mother company.
Glad you've had such a pleasant experience so far! Yeah, I have no idea what some of those companies are thinking with the whole physical copies requiring Steam activation thing. Bleh.

By the way, just in case you haven't seen it yet, there is currently a Word Search Contest going on! http://www.gog.com/news/gogcom_5th_birthday_trivia_round_one Because possible free games are awesome. :D

You already have the Witcher games?

Well, you can give them your CD key here, and get GOG copies for the games, for free, DRM-free.

Thanks! So what about CD Projekt Red? Is that the same, or yet another sub-company?
Welcome home, Charlie!

CD Projekt RED is the mother company Psyringe mentioned.

GOG.com is part of CD PROJEKT Group, which also includes CD Projekt RED the game dev studio and CDP.pl the Polish multimedia distributor.

Charlie? It says he's German not Southeast Asian.
Welcome, Charles. :)

If you need a copy of Torchlight send me a PM.

No kidding -- If I wanted to deal with services like Steam, I'd do so directly, and wouldn't even bother with boxed copies in first place. It's really backwards and irritating. Ah well, at least services like GOG provide a decent alternative. Viva la revolution! Hah hah.

And thanks for the pointer, but I'm not really desperate for more games right now. Already have a small backlog of purchased games here at GOG, plus the two I already downloaded. It's probably enough to last me until the end of the year. Just need to find the time to download and play them all. :)

Yes, I have the first two. I'm pretty happy with the disc versions, since they are more or less DRM free anyway. But I might still register my disc keys, if only to see if they have any interesting bonus material for the games. Thanks for the info!

Thanks, I think I get the idea now.

@mondo84: I already played the first Torchlight, but thanks for the offer! :)

Welcome to GOG Charles. Pretty much what you described as your reasons for joining and using this site, are the same as mine (although, I never used Steam). As far as the small backlog you have already accumulated, wellllllllll, that's just a common side effect we all experience here. Good luck whittling it down...I said the same when I first joined, but somehow it just kept growing like Jack's beanstalk :-) (it's very hard to resist many of the sales and promos). Enjoy your new DRM Free games

Gog forbid it to ever happen ! In any case, the sub forums are a good place to find help to solve your minor issues, and for the most severe bugs the support is said to be efficient (I personnaly never had to reach for them).

The most interesting bonus is that you will get the latest version. If your disc versions are not "enhanced edition" releases, that's worth the effort !
Given past experience with threads of similar titles I prepared myself for the usual content - complaining, ranting and even trolling.
What a relief and pleasant surprise it was to read your first post, Charles ;)

So, welcome and +1 to you.
