Nothing beats dusting off the sega megadrive and playing these games on the original hardware. i am a massive retro gamer and adore Golden Axe on the SMD. i will give this fan game a go and see what it's like. :)

Sega's emulator works fine on Windows 8; you can also extract the ROM with QuickBMS and use it in any emulator.

and the steam versions ?
i have 29 pak files in the data folder under seam folder etc etc
i am assuming those are the roms or do they need to be unpacked too ( pak seems to indicate as much )

Sega ROMs are usually in bin format.

It is the same for all releases of the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis Classics. Yes, the PAK files are the archives. See the PAK to game list for the ID of each game.
The ROMs are compressed in a custom format, hence the need to use a tool to convert them for normal use.
