Steampunk Angband mutation - Steamband
Derek Yu's (creator of Aquaria) Spelunky. I like the pixel art, and can not get enough of the game! It's free for Windows. One of my favorite games.
I know it's not old, but worth checking out.

Actually this roguelike is not old, but this is the first one I have ever played. My friend from highschool has programmed this and he got me playing this game and I really enjoyed it.

Dr_Adder: I already know about the Diablos and Nethack. Are there any others out there? Can they be released on here?

How about Dungeon Hack? It was a Dungeons and Dragons game based on the Eye of the Beholder engine (I don't know the real name for it). The story is thin, somewhat like Nethack's. A sorceress grabs you and sends you into a dungeon to find an item. I forgot the item, probably the amulet of Rodney or something. The graphics where quite good for the early 90s. As for re-playability, the dungeons were random. I forget if the potions were randomized. Keeping yourself full was also on the required things to do, and perhaps torches were required. I still have it on floppies in the box on my shelf. When you died, your name was recorded on dungeon depth and score table. Since I save-scummed a lot, there was typically only one to two names on the table at any given time.
Strategy:
I can't imagine finishing this game without having spell-casting ability. My favorite was the cleric for a really simple 2nd level spell and long hallways, and of course, the "Identify" spell. Second favorite was the magic user for the same reason. Never got any lower than the 7th dungeon level with a fighter, then again, I consumed/read/used everything that fell into my hands: why would a monster carry around a tasty potion of poison!?

Dungeon Crawl is good. Original isn't updated anymore, so I linked this stone soup version. It has ASCII and tile-graphics versions. You can find tile- and ASCII-versions for OSX and Windows from that site, ASCII for DOS and sources for Linux/BSD.

I second this one. Its very easy to get into (complete with a tutorial!), works great as a coffee-brake-rogue, but has enough depth to stay interesting for quite a while.
I'll have to look at the others. I've been searching for a good rpg with an atypical magic system. I really liked the one in Arx Fatalis (the combining the runes thing, not the drawing on the screen thing).
I hear there were some great commercial roguelikes in the 80s and 90s that hit the PC. Too bad classics like Shiren the Wanderer didn't.
Castle of Winds is my personal favorite and it's completely free as well! It's an early Windows game but has a certain charm which I loved at the time.
