I gave up on Lost 1/2 way through the first season as I had the impression it was going to end in one big disappointment.
Now it's over, (apparently), can anyone say whether the whole thing hangs together in a satisfying way, or of they were making it all up as they went along?
If it all works, maybe I'll grab the DVDs and try again. If not, well I guess I saved a lot of time... ;-)

It's not a satisfying ending but it's a satisfying show overall. Despite my WTF over the show it's an experience.
I enjoyed season 1 and 2, the casting was pretty amazing and the acting was pretty good too. At this point, there were lots of unanswered questions but that was ok because I was naively hoping that they would answer major questions during the 3rd season and end the show.
Instead, we got an extremely boring 3rd season, a mediocre 4th and mysteries were accumulating. The 5th season was surprisingly good, the 6th was just ok (besides two episodes that I really liked). The series finale was decent but very predictable. I don't think many people got caught by surprise.
As a person who saw every single episode of it, the good and the bad I can sincerely say it was worthy it.
Lost is something more than just a story, episode after episode. Writers created a wholesome, mysterious world were anything and everything was unpredictable, keeping us, the viewers, on their toes, week after week.
That approach to the making of the series, keeping explanations to the minimum for the sake of mysterious and unique story, although in my personal belief was great, it had its drawbacks.
The biggest problem with Lost is the accusation of "making it up on the spot". It is not 100% inaccurate and the critics have the point. What many don't realize that Lost as a TV show had unpredictable future. Writers were never sure when the show will end. Season two or season four...
So yes, that is true that writers were making stuff up as they went along and that, because of the format of the show, it was more visible than with other shows but they did try to have overarching storyline, full of hints and mystery.
The secondary problem I saw with the show being pointed out is that it was simply confusing. I completely agree with this point but I loved it. Lost was not like any other series out there sort of 4400 (which did fail big time). I don't feel like we needed explanation for everything, for everything to be laid on the blanket. That mystery, that confusion was what made Lost great in my opinion.
To finish it up, you made a big mistake by giving up so quickly mate. I do recommend trying again, trying to look at the bigger picture, at the world created by the writers, at who the characters were, what they represented. Watch it slowly, sometimes rewatching the episodes who made no sense at first. If you manage to see the whole picture of what Lost is, then you will probably see how amazing that show was and why like so many people enjoyed it greatly.
I gave up around Season 2. But I may also try watching it again if a complete box set turns up on Amazon.co.uk.
Yes.
Watched every episode, liked it. Season 5 ended with a cliffhanger, can't wait for the final season here.
I gave up after the first few episodes from the second season. It started to bore me, really.
Cheers. I'll try and pick up a boxed set sometime when it's on sale.
Wasn't sure who to give the solution to, so i voted you all up and gave it to lukas for the most detail.
I'm glad they did get to at least finish it. One of the reasons I gave up so soon was that I'd been burned too many times before with shows that started out trying to do a great arc and then got messed around by possible/actual cancellation so much that they never really got anywhere.

If you're still in Japan, keep an eye out on Amazon.co.uk for it. It'll be cheaper to import a complete box set of seasons 1 through 6 than it will be to buy the first season here. It'll also most likely be cheaper than the US price too. Also don't forget that you won't have to pay VAT so by the time the P&P is added to the price you'll still probably be paying a few pounds less than the UK price.
At least that's been my experience when buying box sets from the UK =)
Buh, Lost sounds like one of those shows I ought to add to the list of shows I've never ever seen but should watch. Smallville, Heroes, The Goode Family (Sorry Mr. Judge, I just can't handle another animated family show right now.), and Dollhouse. I might actually cross Smallville off that list if it turns out it's actually aimed at teens.

ooooooh! /frank spencer voice
The ending left me very unsatisifed with the series, such a letdown. It has been done (better) in other series.
