RSHabroptilus: I guess--according to some here--the lives of David Foster Wallace, Jack Kerouac, John K. Toole, Richard Brautigan and Ernest Hemingway are deserving of no recognition because they all killed themselves in some way.

Are you seriously comparing Staley to Hemingway? Anyhow: I didn't say they or Staley deserve no recognition. Respect? Nope. Well... it depends. Hemingway suffered real mental problems. he should have been committed. Quite different from Curt. Entirely different from cocaine user.

A lot of people with fatal and absolutely agonizing illnesses decide on suicide, and there sometimes is nothing wrong with that. Take ALS for example, an illness my mother is currently suffering the last stages of, and one that not long ago came into the spotlight because of Kevorkian's assistance in one man's suicide.

Suicide is ALWAYS the wrong option. I feel sorry for you and your mom but i don't believe in euthanasia or assisted suicide. I do believe on fighting till the end no matter what as miracles happen every day
Now. Please don't make me an unfeeling monster who doesn't recognizes others pain.
I do know that there are some people seriously ill who are simply crazy and may commit suicide because of 'depression'.
No. My target was more of the "respect a dude who went crazy because he couldn't deal with silly problems". We had thread about Cobain and people respecting him.
How can you respect person like that? A wimp who couldn't face problems of real life and shot himself. How many people he hurt because of that? How many mothers suffered because their kid tried/succeeded in shooting themselves ala their idol.
I hate those kids who try to kill themselves because their girlfriend/boyfriend left or because their band broke up. There is nothing to respect.
And one should not respect Staley or Cobain or whatever. Their works? Why not? Them as person? Never.
So I hope he, Staley has very troublesome afterlife not peace.

While I can understand where you are coming from, I still think Layne should be remembered for his music, not his drug problems.

Dick move. If i believed in hell id hope you burned in it.

Why? Because i do care how my actions affect anyone and everything? That I help anyone i can and to best of my abilities?
That i don't do anything to support people who send 12 year old girls on streets?
For that I should burn in hell but a dude who actually didn't care about anyone but himself and actively supported criminal organization should R.I.P.?

If you don't like the guy, fine, we don't care. At least stop with the whole crime syndicate shit.

It was a joke that like all my jokes wasn't funny it was also uncalled for. But still its not a nice thing to say about someone on the anniversary of their death. I don't agree with anything you have said but don't feel like arguing about it. My arguments will never sway you or even make you question your beliefs like yours wont mine and while i usually do like arguing i don't want to in this thread.

And I'll continue to respect a man for his work, not the way he died. I could care less about what is going on in other countries, cause it happens everywhere. Child prostitution isn't new, and it will continue to go on as long as someone deems it a way to pull in capital. If you have seen some things that fucked you up, then fine, I hope you think you can change it. At least stop degrading a great singer for his drug use.
Not everyone has the wisdom to avoid drugs; not everyone has the strength to fight depression. Losing a battle with either does not lessen the value of a person nor make them deserving of ridicule or scorn.

amen.
I'm actually writing a full length play about the day Kurt died--but hadn't even realized that Staley died on the same day.
I have a list of untimely celebrity deaths though, and he's definitely on it--I just totally hadn't considered it because Alice in Chains doesn't have the same iconography as say, John Lennon or Elvis when crafting caricatures.

Yeah, yeah, I understand your view, I agreed with it when I was calling myself a cynical misanthrope and listening to black metal at 16. It's just a really naive viewpoint; it simplifies people too much, completely ignoring the complexity and minds of these other people as unique.
A guy like D.F. Wallace was one of the most brilliant minds of the last century, and despite all he achieved in his life, in tennis, literature, philosophy, mathematics, etc.etc.etc., he finally just couldn't deal with his severe depression he suffered for over 20 years and hanged himself in 2008. By saying you don't respect a person like that, you're insulting their work; their work is their life and vice versa. Hmph.

Its not just naive, its downright ignorant, insulting and hateful, not just to Layne Staley, Kurt Cobain or any other famous person, but to everyone who has ever dealt with the troubles of drug abuse (of any kind) and clinical depression and their families. I rank it right up there with the people from the Westboro Baptist Church who have been showing up at soldier's funerals, protesting with signs that say things like "Soldiers deserve to die".
Wait a second. I say that people should live and fight to live and you compare me to people who wants others dead.
Come on!
Mental problems. They become very common in recent years. Bad parenthood is justified by kid having some mental disease. They put people on prozacs and god know what.
Everyone got problems. And if you live in western world all those problems are really small compared to real problems out there. There is no reason for a person to go and kill themselves. I am not talking about people who are really messed up in the head. I am talking about those kids who try to kill themselves because gf/bf dumped them, about people who go hang themselves because their boss is mean.
You respect Cobain? Do you also respect that nameless kid who shot himself?
His art as much as I like has nothing to do what i feel towards a person so irresponsible. How many people he hurt? How many people suiciders hurt? Mothers, fathers, husbands, children, wives. They are selfish bastards who thinks about themselves.
@Rohan: Funny... I am a bad guy but you say you don't give a crap about other countries. Only the world around you matters right? What happens in Poland, Peru, Taiwan etc. you just couldn't care less.
I do and I am goddamn proud of that.
