Thanks guys, I'll see what I can find and get back to you after my vacation. :-)
Edit: Don't see anything wrong with web comics, as long as they don't take over the thread. =p

Just to actually give you suggestions based on your tastes:
Pretty much all the Star Wars comics from Dark Horse are good. The afformentioned Dark Times focuses on the years following Ep3. It is the sequel to Star Wars: Republic, which focused on the Clone Wars for the msot part.
Legacy, which is ending soon, covers the far future (luke is very dead :p) and is an interesting take. It heavily inspired the backdrop for the upcoming The Old Republic MMO.
Knights of the Old Republic, which recently ended, was even better than Legacy. It focused on a periphery character who wasn't actually in the games, and how the rise of Revan affected the Republic. Very fun read.
For non-Star Wars, Marvel Comics has actually had some great Sci-fi stuff recently. The Annihilation, Annihilation Conquest, War of Kings, and Reign of Kings events have been pretty good. And they are (largely) written by Dan Abnett, so bonus points.
I'm not a comic fan, but there was one graphic novel whose story made me want to read it...and I loved it.
The Red Son.
Its a re-telling of Superman, but instead of landing & growing up in the US, he lands & lives in the USSR. A very interesting twist. Highly recommended!

Oooh, Elseworlds stories, I forgot about them. I need to add three of my favorites to my earlier recommendations:
Batman: Gotham By Gaslight - Basically the book that started the whole Elseworlds line. What if Batman was a Victorian era superhero and Jack the Ripper paid a visit to Gotham City?
Superman: Speeding Bullets - Baby Kal-El is sent to Earth from his native Krypton and he is discovered by... Thomas and Martha Wayne. They raise him as their son Bruce until the fateful day when a mugger shoots them in a Gotham alley. You know what happens next, except this time, Batman can fly... and he's bullet-proof... and has heat vision.
Kingdom Come - You can't mention Elseworlds and not mention the penultimate Elseworlds story, Kingdom Come. Its the future of the DC Universe and the "old" superheroes have given rise to a new generation of violent vigilantes. When the new "heroes" take things too far, its up to the old generation to come back to try to set things right and prevent an apocalypse. A compelling story and beautiful painted artwork by Alex Ross; one of the finest examples of comics as an art form (IMO, of course).

Truly epic story actually. Another reason to hunt down DC's 52/Final Crisis as both Red Son Superman and Frank Millers The Dark Knight Returns Superman appear making their 'worlds' canon.

Kingdom Come is utterly beautiful. Alex Ross at his finest.

That looks interesting, thanks for mentioning it.
I personally like crossover (Lobo & The Mask, Batman & Judge Dred etc...)

+1 Red Son is my favorite Superman story and a must read for any Superman fan.
DC has a lot of "What if" stories. I also recommend "Superman: Last Son of Earth". In this story Clark Kent is sent as a baby to Krypton from Earth to avoid a disaster and there he discovers a green lantern ring which he uses to save Krypton and return to Earth. It has a sequel called "Superman: Last Stand on Krypton."
Also, as others mentioned earlier "Kingdom Come" is an awesome story but its sequel "The Kingdom" wasn't as good IMO.
