GOG's AvP launch. A true dissapointment
Yea, I was actually pretty mad with these guys and had I not found a way around the freaking launcher I would have demanded a refund. Personally, I only play single player so I only wanted it for that and had to dig in its folder to just launch the freaking thing (it was like a really old game or a poorly done demo). Needless to say, very thankful we get awesome game, can't express how disappointed at how they threw in what amounts to DRM though. Maybe I should have checked around first, but I was excited to finally buy this game on here and just put down the cash when I saw it on the front page.

Q: Is this the beta build setup_avp_classic_2.0.0.21.exe in which was:
A: Being given away... and there was no option to buy the game.
B: Was being used to test the multi-player part of the Galaxay Client?

OR is this the version (setup_avp_classic_2.0.0.25.exe) that has appeared after the "Buy" option has appeared?

.
Ay Caramba! My bad, the galaxy multiplayer promo email has the avp code.

All hail GOG!

WeAreNotAlone: the version (setup_avp_classic_2.0.0.25.exe) that has appeared after the "Buy" option has appeared?
This one. I waited until it was available for purchase exactly because I was not interested in Galaxy at all.

BoKeRoN: Or they could change the point at where the game checks for GOG Galaxy and leave LAN Play alone. There are several ways to fix this crap. I don't mind having to log in to use someone's game servers or network services, but doing it for LAN? It defeats the whole purpose of LAN Play.
avatar
F4LL0UT: Who said anything about this game having LAN play? :P No, but seriously now, the lack of LAN play is Rebellion's fault, since it was absent in the Steam version as well as far as I know, and there's only so much GOG can demand from a developer. If you want LAN play you will have to bitch to Rebellion.
According to your logic, nobody said LAN play was removed in this version, so it's GOG fault for advertising it incorrectly.

That's actually *not* according to my logic but I agree that GOG should maybe mention this fact because there's bound to be a certain number of users who expect this version to be capable of everything the original game was.

Game card explicitly says it does not need online connection to play. There's no mention to GOG GALAXY either. So if a multiplayer game does not need online connection to play and no special software to play multiplayer (according to gamecard) you can only think of LAN or Hotseat. It's not even logic, it's common sense, specially when there's a number of multiplayer games on GoG that only work on LAN since the online service they used dissapeared.
Worst of it is, if GOG wanted, they could actually offer LAN play using the same technology Galaxy uses without the need to log in to anything, just limiting it to local networks...
There are quite a number of solutions, but no word from GOG at all.

Yeah, and it's true. You don't need one to play.

The whole point of Galaxy is to enable convenient online play, it would be moronic to use any of it for LAN. And again: it's Rebellion who did not restore LAN play in this version of the game so stop bitching to GOG and tell Rebellion to add the option if you really want it.

As I said: they should IMO mention on the gamecard that LAN play is not present in this version but it's really not their fault that it's missing from this release.

Here's the wrinkle, though: while Rebellion didn't restore LAN play for their versions, GOG.com did for their own (which is obviously what they're selling here). As such, saying that LAN play is not present in some form in this version would be false advertising. However, the bizarre thing is that the multiplayer components - both online and LAN - require GOG Galaxy to function, which requires you be a GOG.com user who owns the game! Given that the way GOG Galaxy's multiplayer components function constitutes DRM, the multiplayer portions effectively being advertised as DRM-free (GOG.com advertises all of its games as DRM-free, with individual exceptions noted in the game pages) is the false advertising IMO.

How is there LAN multiplayer present in the GOG version? All I see is the ability to have players in the same local network use Galaxy online multiplayer to play together. Or are you telling me that these players are actually going to be connected locally?

Ah, I see. I misread some previous comments which made me think this game actually had LAN play. My mistake.

That being said, the online component requiring a GOG.com account which actually owns the game, and said component being mandatory, isn't mentioned anywhere on the game page! Yes, I know it would be stupid to have the multiplayer be optional - especially since it's advertised on the game page - but the point is the DRM this game has isn't advertised. Also, as others will likely claim, some games on GOG.com demonstrate, such as UT2004 (which, AFAIK, uses a single, pre-entered CD-key), it's possible to do multiplayer without resorting to an account. I realize it's a bit more complicated than that, but again, people see one game doing it, and may expect it on other games, too.

Unless Epic Games have deactivated serial checks on their servers it's still as much DRM as account systems, though, only you don't get anything in return (whereas accounts can store player progress and support social features for setting up matches with friends etc.). I haven't tried playing GOG's UT2004 release online, yet, but I was under the impression that you need to request a unique key if you don't want to get kicked each time another GOGer decides to play online with the default serial.
You can win this game if you are lucky....

Yeah, with UT2004, you will have to request a unique key from Support to get it to play online. The default key built into the game apparently doesn't work with most servers. But at least you don't have to create a special account to play UT2004 online.

But I wonder if UT99 needs a unique key to play online. Has anyone tried that out?

It shouldn't. Patch 436 removed the cd-key requirement from what I recall.
