but if you only rent the games how will they sell you DLC?

DieRuhe: I guess I just don't see the point, especially at that price.

kodeen: The point is to make it cheaper to manufacture. There isn't any benefit to consumers.
And given the antiquity of the hardware itself, this is highway robbery.

Gee, I'm so glad they spent time and money doing this... "Hey, it's seven years old; time to pull out our 'let's give it a slimmer look' thing."

I guess I just don't see the point, especially at that price.

hedwards: So, what features are they taking away this time? I'm still a bit bitter about having the original PS3 slim, the one where they physically removed components and made it effectively useless for playing PS2 games.
I expect the signing keys that were revealed to the world:)

I.E. their new "unhackable" (until someone is arsed to actually try) console.

Perhaps they can live with the fact that I would need to rent the GOTY copy or rent it on disc. Plus, they don't care about me, so they can feck off.

That was rather embarrassing. The "unhackable" console was ultimately cracked within months of them pissing off the hacker community.

And this is how I know the PS3 and PS4 will remain hackable: real security costs serious money and Sony is not in the business of being anything but skinflints wherever they can manage to shave a few pennies:)

about 30% more HD space for roughly the same price as is current; when MS released their remodel they offered nothing new besides internal power support for the Knect and then changed the systems hard drive format so people couldn't directly transfer their old hard drives to the new systems.

no one said you had to buy the new model if you already have the old, and if your on the market for buying a PS3 this new format gives the base model nearly the same hard drive space as the current high end model.

sure it would be good if there was a cheaper version too, like a $199 version, but the only difference between $199 and $270 is the cost of a single (new) game ... which Sony has committed to including in each version (granted that the low end has got an older game while the high end will have a major new release ... but Sony is trying to make it harder to view the lower cost ver as a better buy and for once it kinda will be).

The new XBox 360 model also came with cables that weren't in the old base models, 250 GB hard drive space, and a couple of other little neat things. The newer XBox 360 base model came with a hard drive instead of none.

DieRuhe: I didn't realize PS4 was going to be mainly a digital thing. Ugh.

Sogi-Ya: officially unconfirmed, but it's happening (both with the PS4 and the 720) ... I guess there is room on the list for both systems to offer up both conventional disk-based systems & disk-drive-less Dial-a-Boxs versions at launch, but that would just be to appease the masses and ease the transition with a discontinuation of the hold over system soon after (like how SONY nix-ed the PS2 supporting versions).

...
Oh yeah, I think I remember hearing something about this a while ago - you'd get the console, but for an added price you could get an add-on that would allow you to use discs. Unless my memory is faulty. Great. "Let's take what they have now and split it; that way they'll have to pay more to get the same thing! Brilliant!" :-)

In the US. Europe gets whooping twelve gigabytes for the price of 160.
The only PS3 worth getting is the original fatty with PS2 backwards compatibility.

Go for the original. Go for the best. The phat PS3 <3

Yours is still alive? Two of my friends' phat PS3s got the YLOD; only one of them could be fixed and the fix is most likely temporary.

I have the second-gen phat 80GB, with backward-compatibility through software emulation (i.e.not all titles will work properly), and I agree that it can be quite loud and hot (not as much as my PC, though). Given the sale of PS2 games through the Playstation Store (at a reasonable $10 per, including God Hand, which would cost 3 times as much for a disc copy) and other titles receiving worthy resolution upgrades (such as MGS3), I use the backward compatibility less than ever before. That doesn't excuse its absence, but at least there are alternatives to picking up a PS2 for many games.

I'll stick with my current PS3 until it dies, and that will probably mark the end of my console gaming lifespan. Consoles may cost less initially than a gaming PC, but the game prices are super high compared to the various digital outlets competing for your PC gaming dollar.

I've got the worst model possible - the generation right after they got rid of PS2 backwards compatibility, but the very same one that still makes it sound like a jet engine is in your living room.
