Silently, imperceptibly, gradually. Like miracles, elves and vampires before them. What happened. Have we got bored of it. HAVE THEY GOT BORED OF US ? Have we overdone it ? WHAT WILL REPLACE THEM ? What can we check the skies for ? When will the transdimentional or timetravelling craze start ? Are we not ready ? Is that not different enough ?

What will challenge our worldviews now, or are our worldviews too multiple to allow for such cultural ripples and mass phenomenons, instead of simply soaking new ideas in our multiplicity like water on sands ? where will we turn our armchair experises towards, what will do us justice by reversing "conventional dogma" through a new element that only the courageous humble would percieve ? Economy ? Bah, boring, internal.

Thank god we have gods. And enduring ghosts. And jews, sometimes. But none of these are revolutionary. Even witches and sorcerers get better renewed, outside Europe, by re-emerging from new sociopolitical contexts. This would be awesome if the by-product wasn't so bloody. We need something new, that doesn't offer an opportunity for righteous murder. Simply a new "Watch the skies", a new intrusion, a new challenging concept, with a new set of beliefs.

Come on, are we postmodernized to death ?

Is the fact that I'm meta-ranting about it already the proof that we've sterilized the field ?
:(
I think they saw that nutter on the History Channel and decided that if pure-blooded idiots like that can get on TV, why the hell are we bothering with the planet at all?

The neverending torrent of reality (chortle) TV can't have helped either.

I miss 90s Star Treks, Babylon 5, farscape, stargates, Rosewell (okay. haven't seen that one at all. but I heard it was good), xfiles...

good times. We have DW now so it's worth at least two series we lost but we are certainly missing aliens and or space exploration on our TVs.
I heard BSG was good but after 2 seasons I had to drop it. too much angst and whiny and dickheads while not enough fun characters who I don't want to die every episode. Seriously: i was hopping Cylons would just kill them all and have fun adventures exploring the galaxy.
"The best proof that intelligent life exists somewhere in the universe is that they didn't bother to contact us"
One of my favorite Calvin and Hobbes quotes ^^
I think the ghost hunters and yeti hunters have taken over all the believers. That and there haven't been any TV shows based on ET.
However, History channel has been running a lot of shows about aliens, lately. From the aliens from history series to the USA drone and Stealth Technology was stolen UFO tech series. According to them there's even secret tunnels underneath the USA that allows the transportation of these gigantic flying saucers between Area 51 and other military installations around the world.
They all give me a good laugh, and of course that "Aliens built the pyramids" guy with the poofy hair is behind all of this.

As much crap as we give Licurg he's actually on the ball with this one.
They tried both democracy, and feudalism, once. Didn't turn out very well.
I never cared for UFO but I'll be sad the day people have outgrown conspiracy theories. They are awesome. As for supernatural stuff like elves or vampires they have their reason too otherwise people wouldn't care about them. Folklore is a minor but imporant as cultural value (IMO).

I'll be happy once the zombie craze is over though.

You know, I think the opposite. I think there has been so many movies, comics, series, cartoons, novels about ETs, that the notion has become too mainstream, too mundane. Too democratized. The UFO craze probably required flying saucers and alien to be a slightly new, scandalous, revolutionary idea - present in scifi litterature, but indirectly widespread as it hadn't been overdone, or most people had indirect access to the notion (the actual source fictions being still a bit "niche", and not as mainstream as nowadays). So, the main medium for it was rumours, journalism, etc...

Now that we'be been over-saturated with these tales and notions, we don't need word of mouth, community speculations or family talks to give them flesh. The ET field of imagination found another "support" of expression, more stable, larger, more available. This dried up the "conspiracy talks" channels a bit. Communicating vases, and all that.

At least, that's how I see things...
