I have only ever watched the first season as of now, so I can only comment on that. But still it is probably my favourite TV show, yet I can't really explain why. Something in the contrast between that calm and lovable small-town atmosphere that somehow makes you feel calm and at home, and the mystery surrounding everything and permeating each character. It's hard to explain, but I think just by watching the first few episodes you know what I mean, and this subconscious feeling is probably what allowed the show to be successful. In any case, nothing like it has ever been seen on TV before or since. The latter is a bit of a shame, actually.
It's just a world I always like to dive into, you feel like you know the characters so well. Also, they're some of the most memorable characters ever, on the big or the small screen. Do you know the feeling when you see some actor in a movie/show and recognise the face, and you have to go look up on IMDb where you know him/her from? The result of this search is, for me, disproportionately often Twin Peaks, which just confirms my opinion that Twin Peaks had some of the most memorable and interesting characters ever written and played.
Killarooski: But, watching something like Twin Peaks for the purpose of "getting it" or trying to make sense of the story is missing the point, imo. Like most of Lynch's material, the emphasis is on the imagery and experiencing what's being presented to you as it comes.
Exactly. On that note, to people who agree with and enjoy this I would also recommend to pick up a Blu-Ray or DVD of Jim Jarmusch's latest movie The Limits of Control, which is just about that. Quite a different setting and a rather banal storyline, but it is really in the same vein. Mystery everywhere, weird characters to wonder about, an unbelievable love for details, excellent soundtrack and cinematography... and an obsession with coffee!
