awalterj: Wait, wasn't the A.I. problem fixed now? What else is not good in this release? I'm thinking about picking up Earth 2140.
It wasn't fixed, the Windows version is still bugged. It's fortunate, though, that GOG also offers the DOS version, which doesn't have the AI problem.

Nope.
Must admit, did not know about TopWare being evil. Well, was not going to get anything from this promo anyway.

Tannath: Not much for me this week. I'm thinking about Gorky 17, but it's not supported by Win7 or 8, so I don't know...

awalterj: I have the GOG version of Gorky 17 and it works without any problems on Win7, great game by the way.
Was that on 32 or 64 bit?

I played it on two different PCs with Win7, worked fine in either case .

Hum, that's good to hear, I think I'll grab it then. Thanks for the info. =)

The AI problem was never "fixed". Zuxxez (or whatever was the company named) never acknowledged there is any problem whatsoever so it never fixed. At least after long time GOG included old DOS version of game as bonus. That one at least has working AI but has its own problems. It has some missing sounds and suffers from slowdowns even in not-so-big battles.
Maybe it can be solved but I never managed it (not even by increasing cycles in DOSBOX) and frankly I just gave up on it.

Year ago there was something labeled with HD version released on Steam and they claimed the AI was fixed but it was reported it is sstill not fixed so their claim was blatant lie. They mentioned the GOG verison is coming in few days and it's over year now but considering it does nothing with AI, it's no loss.

The fact it was sold here for a long time (3 years) is enough for me to not recommend the game (I hate Zuxxez now for pretending like the issue never issued and was very displeased by GOG selling not working game for several years without any warning) and maybe I am bit too hars on the game for it, but it really annoyed me and DOS version is not flawless at all so I don't see why reason why to advice people to pick this up.
Add to this Topware case of screwing over indie devs and I would surely spend my money elsewhere (I already own almost all games I want on this promo, though, so too late for me:-)).

Vythonaut: Just noticed that... too bad! Although the user "FrankTheKiD" (3rd page on reviews) says it works for him.. but then it would be mentioned in the system requirements i guess... anyway. It seems there is nothing in this sale for me today..
It is not supported because some people reported problems with the game. I think it was with AMD cards and Win 7. I have AMD and have no problems but it doesn't mean there are no problems and people should be careful and chceck the game forum first.

Gorky 17 is a bit finicky about the system and configuration, so caveat emptor (that's Japanese and means something like "Beware the ninjas..."). It may or may not work fine, and I guess the reason GOG doesn't officially support 7 nor 8 is that it tends to have more issues there, or at least PCs running on those Windows versions. But it also depends what graphics card you have etc.

Potential problems from my experience (trying it on various different PCs of different ages in my household, running XP, 7 or 8.1; this was over a year ago though):

- The 3D accelerated graphics may be glitchy, or not work at all. Solution: run the game in software mode instead. The good news is that in this game the software mode looks almost as good as the 3D accelerated mode, mainly because only the moving objects are made of polygons, not the backgrounds etc. So I don't consider it a biggie if it doesn't run in 3D accelerated mode, even if it still preferable.

- As said above, software mode works more reliably, BUT I did have one Windows XP PC where the software mode didn't work at all, the game wouldn't even start. But at the same time, the 3D accelerated mode worked fine on that PC, which was odd. On all other PCs the SW more worked more reliably than the 3D accelerated mode. Just showing how hard it may be to tell beforehand how it will work.

- The audio may stutter. To me it seems this may happen if running the game in software mode (see above). In Windows XP, disabling audio HW acceleration in Control Panel fixed the stutter for me; in 7 and 8 there is no such option so if you have audio stutter, you'll just have to live with it I think.

- You might be able to live with the audio stutter, but in some places it may become so bad that the whole game stutters for awhile. It is not a game breaking thing necessarily as this is a turn-based game, but it just sounds and looks nasty.

- In one latter mission, for me there was a persistent crashing problem where the mission (and whole game) would crash at the same place every time. That happened only in 3D accelerated mode, so I was able to pass it by replaying that mission in software rendering mode (and I also got serious audio stutter at that point), and then switching back to 3D accelerated one in the next mission.

I think most can make the game work passably, at least in software mode. I actually got Gorky 17 working ok even on a virtualized PC (Windows XP running in VMWare Player; Windows 7 was the host OS). It ran fine in software mode, without audio stutter.

Too bad GOG doesn't officially support 7 or 8, as I guess that means one is not eligible for a refund, in case the game does not run on your Windows 7/8 system. Understandable GOG doesn't provide that, but still.

I think there may be issues with Geforce too, at least running it in 3D accelerated mode. But if you run Gorky 17 in software mode, it probably doesn't matter that much which graphics card brand you have. Were you running it with 3D acceleration?

With 3D acceleration. I just tried it to be sure and if I pick "AMD Radeon HD 6800/Direct 3D HAL" option it runs just fine.

Thanks for the heads up! I guess i'll have to try and see myself. If it doesn't work with Win7, I'll try with Virtual PC or Wine in Linux.. :)

Ok, that's interesting. If I had issues with the 3D acceleration (also in Windows 7/8 with Geforce GTX 670M), there may have been e.g. disappearing objects (like some of your men were partly or completely invisible), or even 3D version not running at all.

The machines where the 3D accelerated version ran better for me tended to be older Windows XP machines, and they generally actually had some sort of (mobile) ATI or AMD graphics.

For the heck of it, I think I want to try it with my current smaller laptop with Intel HD Graphics 4000, not sure if I tested it already...

Earth 2140 is not that bad, I've just recently finished it along with expansions (playing as ED). I can't comment on compatibility issues because I own a retail version of "Earth Universe" (compilation of all Earth titles + expansions).

You just have to keep in mind that this game was released in late 90s when a lot of RTS games were made. Few of them were truly bad, and just a few really great. Most of them were just average. I bet each of us can name a lot of them: Dark Reign; Dark Colony; Krush, Kill ‘n’ Destroy; War Wind; War Inc... Earth 2140 is not different. Each of those games had something special that could make it a great experience for some people. In Earth 2140 I enjoy stealing technologies and using helicopters to transport your soldiers behind enemy's base, so that they can take down some buildings to switch off main turrets. Then your main army can easily crash the rest.

The drawbacks are very typical though. Rock, paper, scissors, older armies are redundant, missions' objective: destroy your opponent (90% of them and even if it's more complex in practice you'll have to eliminate your opponent's base anyway). So yeah, typical RTS from that era.

To be honest I only replayed it because late 90s is one of the best periods in my life so playing games that I played then is a great way to bring back those memories. I doubt I would play it otherwise so get this game only if you really like early RTS games.
