NWN2 was pretty fantastic but the one thing that spoiled it was the lack of random treasure.

I do not want to know where to go and what box to open to get such and such an item (unless its part of a mission), is NWN1 like that? If so, i don't want it.

My short answer is "yes".

NWN does have more random drops and treasure contents, but it also has some issues. The biggest problem is parties. You can only have 1 or 2 people in your party, and the controls are AWFUL.

The NWN multiplayer community is way better. There is MUCH more fan content and it tends to be higher quality. NWN has mounts, although the OC doesn't use them. Oh, and all the NWN premium modules are F2P now.

urknighterrant: ... parties. You can only have 1 or 2 people in your party...
A later patch fixed this to allow more than 2 in a party. However, parties are all AI-controlled and you still can't have more than 2 in the original campaign. There are tons of user-made modules and some premium content that uses more than 2 people in a party.

I didn't play much NWN2. I never drew me in like NWN. But NWN is definitely a game worth getting. You might not put 1500 hours into it over 10 years like me, but you'll probably put quite a bit of time in if you play it online and you try some great custom content.
Thanks for the replys.

To tell the truth, i have never finished the NWN2 campaign! Character creation is way too complex (i can see here how the game can last years!)

I have played through most of the campaign 3 times, but my party always turns out too weak, and i have to 'try again'.

I have also tried character builds i find on the internet but they are not designed for the campaign so that never works either.

Also i loved the way the keep system worked in NWN2, is there anything like that in NWN1?
NWN1 is more a RPG than MM2: MM2 is a SquadPG, so it is less immersive.

What is best in NWN2 is the DD3.5 system. NWN1 uses the not so good DD3.0 (there is a mod to make it 3.5).
In NWN2 the campaign window is a good idea, where your Ranger could shine seeing monsters from afar, but it is badly done as it's an idiot real-time game where you hardly control anything.
There are many other good ideas in NWN2, halas not well done..

The keep system is more of a scripted overlay than part of the core game mechanic, so there's no reason NWN can't use it, too. But as a rule it doesn't. At least not in the OC.

There is a module on the vault called Darkness Over Daggerford that was built by Ossian Studios, the same company that eventually made Mysteries of Westgate for NWN2. It was in this module that the Keep system was originally conceived and implemented, so while it's not as refined as the keep system in NWN2, it is integrated into the game.

Yes - you should!

I actually enjoyed the original game and all the expansions although Hordes of the Underdark is widely regarding as the best of the series.

Only really frustrating thing for me was the sudden difficulty spikes that meant I had to repeat the same battle again and again and again.... Having said that, I'm, at best, an average gamer so you may fare better.
Depends on how well you adapt to older graphics. The game itself is fun and the story is great, but I can not stand the older graphics :( At some point I lost my ability to adapt to games that don't look at least as good as NWN 2.

I also fall here myself, sorta. Now, I'm not a graphics fiend; I still play all my old dos games in all their pixelatedness, but NWN1 to me just looks soo bland and boring.

Vampire: Redemption even looks way better. And, I also agree the controls are rather terrible lol. It's still worth checking out though and even with my own dislikes, (never played myself) multiplayer is where it's at.

Despite their close similarities in rules, the actual feel of the campaigns are very different. If you liked NWN2, then its predecessor is at very least worth a shot. If you like random loot, then that's good news: most of the loot in NWN1 was randomly generated (pick up the "weapon focus" feat if you want to give the RNG a hint about what you'd like to find)
I'd warmly recommend it. While NWN2 is much better in terms of graphics, NWN will bring you thousands of hours of gameplay. NWN2 has a great campaign in MotB, but finishing NWN OC is just the beginning of the original game. Hordes of the Underdark alone should be enough for instant buy, but besides that, you have some truly great premium modules and user created content. This is one of the best cost-value games on GOG.
I too think NWN2 is great, I played the main campaign and Mysteries of Westgate. NWN i played HoTU, which is said to be the best campaign for that game, and I really liked it.

It's actually very hard to find great RPGs, these ones are the only good ones I played all the way through, in years of searching.. I never play for more than 2 hours a game that doesn't convince me or bores me to tears

yes you should play it... great storyline very engaging and i recomend running your own nwn1 server and go nuts with the dm clientlots of fun and there and the toolset is easy and intuitive if you wanted to make a module for the soul purpose of making an uber singleplayer cheat character
NWN was a linear bore. The amount of flexibility was limiting. The voice acting was over the top;embarrassing. The storyline was old and trite - you knew where they story was headed from the get-go.

NWN2 is also linear, however handled far better. The immersion is like night versus day. If you played D&D; this just feels like playing around the table with your friends.

Graphics are similar but the music is another area that was improved. In NWN2, it's dark and cheesy, like watching Dark Sahdows - absolutely perfect.

I disagree, but we all have opinions. The linearity doesn't bother me, infact I hate games that are too open ended and feel dispersive.

NWN Hotu was very good, I didn't find any embarassing voice acting. Def one of the best RPGs ever made.

I also disagree about the music. In NWN2 it's not improved as both games have amazing quality soundtracks, I have been a musician for 20 years.

Graphics are not similar at all, in NWN2 they look hand-painted, in NWN they are more basic. The music is not 'cheesy' in either game, it's orchestral music made by total pros. I have actually been really impressed by the quality.

Both great games, but for NWN i'd only play Hotu
