However, market research led us to believe that a vast single-player story was important to end-users; they did not want to see Mechwarrior-style missions where the party would be briefed, charge off like raging lunatics, slay and loot the villains, and then return to the tavern for a nice cup of mead.
"

i'm insulted. i loved the mechwarrior games. and battletech lore is almost as deep as D'n'D worlds.
Nothing here meant to insult mechwarrior fans - it is just a different genre. The whole idea of 'brief, raid, repeat' is very military in nature and suited well to mechwarrior but for a fantasy game, not so much. It has NOTHING to do with the scope or quality of the game lore. Just the nature of the setting and what players expect of it.
Rather odd place to ask. Most of us NWN forum lurkers are fans.

IMHO best game concept ever with a nearly flawless execution. Dated? Of course; but it will be years, maybe even decades, before we see anything like it again.
anyways, i thought the OC had pretty decent dialog and should at least be played for the tutorial. otherwise boringly linear. haven't tried the expansion campaigns yet. the installed "Witcher's Wake" module is intriguing so far, but maybe i should start with a higher level character ,or a boring ol' fighter since the surrounding wolves keep eating my lv.2 rogue ass. never quite found the time or movtivation to explore every already-installed mod in the diamond edition.

as for fan-made mods, i found "The Silver Key" to be annoyingly hard , full of cringey bad jokes and game-breaking bugs. but for the munchkin in me , it looks like it can be very exploitable for creating overpowered characters for use in other mods or just testing out different builds on ridiculously powerful space demons or whatever.

the somewhat infamous "A Dance with Rogues" turned out to be a bit too linear for my tastes. too many unskippable in-game cutscenes, fights are too hard and should be avoided(too bad boss fights can't be skipped), and it pretty much forces you to play as a human/half-elf female rogue. and call me a trannie, but i probably had more fun dressing up mah "birdie" in various slutty clothing, instead of progressing the plot. it's funny how every female version of the same armor becomes extra slutty when a female character wears one. even full plate armor becomes bikini armor!

the series of mods i read about ,in another forum, that's suppose to be a Planescape:Torment remake sounds like it might be impressive.

i think it's this one.

Some dialogues are good, others are hilariously half-assed and stale. My blog gives a few examples.
haven't tried the expansion campaigns yet.
They're better than the OC. HotU is actually quite good.
As with others, I'll say the OC is good. The other 2 campaigns are good (I still haven't beaten any of them). And multiplayer will blow your mind and time.

I've easily spent 1000+ hours on this game, and it's because of persistent online worlds and DM-led campaigns. Ask anyone who's done a DM-led campaign in NWN1 and they'll probably tell you it's the best gaming experience they've ever had in their life.

If you want to try one some time, I bet someone here will host. I try to host one every year or so, sometimes combining it with my annualish treasure hunt. Anyway, there's also persistent worlds that will almost as equally blow your mind. They fall flat for me these days b/c of play time. They can become more complex and interesting, but for every minute of fun, there's 30 minutes of finding and building the fun. For DM-led campaigns, it's a ride the whole way.

All that said, the OC shines in a few ways:
1) Some of the quests are great
2) The story isn't horrible
3) You get to play through a full game and get to feel out the characters

I hope you enjoy it!

Oh, and the grass isn't green at NWN2. It's an OK game, but NWN1 is by far the best.
NWN1 is awesome.
But it's awesome in a different way to any other RPG.

Original campaign is good, Undrentide expansion is good, Underdark is very good.

The mods are what makes NWN awesome, and the mods are not like Skyrim mods which add a bit of this or a bit of that to the original campaign, though there are such too, the good mods are full blown new stories, like the official expansions. And a few of them are amongst the best RPG's I've ever played.

Some are like Dawnguard or Dragonborn to Skyrim, some are like New Vegas to Fallout 3.

Here's an old thread with few must play ones:

That's what makes NWN so good.
You buy a game and get a thousand expansions free of charge.

Jarmo: Fallout 3.

Which modules are they, so I know not to go near them. :-P

But yeah, Swordflight Chapter Two is probably one of the best RPGs I've played. I recommend that one to Baldur's Gate veterans. Whoever passes up NWN because they judge it on the OC, well, that's their loss.
