Ok, I've watched the new season of Doctor Who. And Doctor becoming a woman is the best part of it. Simply because all other parts are rather mediocre.

(The Rosa Parks and the Pakistan episodes were kinda ok, but the rest really made me miss the Moffat/Davies era.)

Is the side-kick even a hot guy? I did not watch or read about this at all besides a few posts in this thread.

It's a whole team. The hot guy is actually an old dude (Bradley Walsh really steals the show), and there's a somewhat cool young couple with them. I actually like the companions in that season.

But the plots and the tone are really... dunno, light, disjointed, childish, over-exposed (oh damn does this doctor perpetually narrate what's going on, feels like an audio episode each time, or like those schoolyard games where we had to explain everything that we played pretend to do). Simply badly written, I feel. It gave me the same impression as when attempting to watch the Sarah Jones Adventures. Doctor Who for little kids exclusively.

But I see that the current writer, Chris Chibnall, is already getting quite some flack for it. Which, on one hand, makes me feel sorry for him, on the other hand reassures me...

The show became a preachy mess. It lost the focus of what the Doctor is. Maybe Whitaker will grow into the roll, but the material they had to wrok with was pretty meh. A lot of drawn out episodes that moved very slowly only to rush to the ending in the last 5 minutes. If Chibnall is doing his best, then they need to hire better writers. I've seen better fanfics.

There were no memorable episodes this season. I wouldn't call them bad, but not particularly good either. I liked some of them better, mostly in the second half, for specific elements (the robots in the Amazon parody, the setting in the Pakistan one, Alan Cumming in the one with the witches), but in general they are one or two steps below past seasons. The companions are bland (except Graham) and not flesh out enough (possibly a side effect of having three companions introduced at the same time as a new Doctor, with fewer episodes per season). They are a very diverse cast, but they forgot to make them interesting.

I'd say Jodie's performance is good though. She has clearly become the Doctor and I have no problem seeing her as the same character as the previous ones (especialy Eccleston's and Tennant's Doctors). It's the writing that needs to improve. Let's wait and see what the New Year's special brings.

Despite all of this, I am confident, with the experience that the new team has gathered, that future seasons can improve. To be honest, Russell T. Davies' first season had some really bad moments but they managed to improve.
