Do whatever you want... in space.

X Gold, X2: The Threat, X3: Reunion & X3: Terran War Pack, a series of sandbox space-simulators, are available now, DRM-free on GOG.com. Look out for the games at up to 75% off in the Classic X Pack during the Big Fall Promo, or grab the games individually at 50% off.

The X games - X Gold, X2: The Thread, X3: Reunion & X3: Terran War Pack - are a series of some of the most ambitious and sophisticated space-roaming simulators ever created. This is no exaggeration.

The universe is a vast, ruthless place, a true final frontier, where the strong and cunning prosper while the weak are eaten up alive without mercy. But do you have the guile and determination to make it?
The X Series are true sandboxes - you are in charge of your destiny from the second you leave the hangar for the first time, until the moment you deem yourself satisfied with your galactic conquest.

Even though the complexity may be overwhelming to newcomers, the rewards are incredible: in the X Series you can do whatever you want. Become a roaming mercenary - go from nimble fighters to hulking destroyers, join one of the many factions in war, build and maintain a massive trading empire from rags to riches, even own your own trading posts and facilities. The possibilities are incredible.

You can now grab the entire series at up to 75% off in the Classic X Pack during the Big Fall Promo!

Trade, Fight, Build, Think in X Gold, X2: The Threat, X3: Reunion & X3: Terran War Pack, available now, DRM-free on GOG.com

mrh5474: One question I have though. I am presuming that each title requires a great deal of time to play. Also, was each sunsequent title an improvement on the previous one? Basically what I am asking is, should I just buy X3? What do the other titles have that it different? If I only have time to really commit to one of these, would it be X3?
I asked myself the same question when I decided to jump from X3 Reunion to either X3:TC or X3:AP. I had previously played X2 a lot and jumped to X3 Reunion when it came out.

Long story short, X3:TC offers a classic campaign or sandbox experience with a live and exciting universe, but nothing too disruptive (ok, I guess massive alien fleet invasions do occur every now and then, and are a bit disruptive, but things are eventually rebuilt by the game's economics engine).

X3: AP is more dynamic, some sectors are disputed, the Terrans are now in an all out war with the Commonwealth and the X3 universe in AP is a lot more dangerous. To be honest it was dangerous enough already for my tastes.

I ended up playing X3: TC and currently have a sandbox game in which I've spent somewhere around 8 days (yes, ~192 hours of my life).

Both X3:TC and X3:AP are excellent choices and offer a lot more exciting stuff compared to the previous games (do I need to mention ship boarding mechanics?), additional ship classes, better station mission mechanics etc. So if you want to buy just one out of the bunch I guess you're better off with the Terran War Pack which contains both games.

For anyone interested in playing X3 games, newcomers or veterans alike, I recommend that you play use X3AP Litcube's Universe mod. It's one of the best mods ever made, for any game. It's essentially what X4 would have been. It touches on and improves almost every area of the game: UI, optimizations, game mechanics. It finally gives an answer to the "what do I do after I spent 200 hours building my fleet?" question. It is so good, that these days while playing the vanilla GOG game release (to test it out) I have to force myself not to install LU because the vanilla game lacks so many things.

Anyway, definitely should not be missed:
https://code.google.com/p/litcubesuniverse/wiki/Index

If you do want to install it please continue reading. The LU mod installer assumes you have the Steam copy and the X3AP_n.exe (a non-Steam executable that Egosoft provided for Steam users that didn't want to bother with Steam after downloading the game). Obviously X3AP_n.exe doesn't exist in the GOG release since X3AP.exe is already DRM-free. Another problem is that the GOG release has a problem right now (it's slightly different from the Steam release in a way that breaks some mods, including LU) but the fix is easy. In short, to install LU over the GOG release do the following:
- copy X3AP.exe to X3AP_n.exe
- remove addon/types/gamestarts.pck from the game directory

Then run the installer(s), follow through the LU mod installation instructions. Have fun!

Thanks for the reply, as this means, I now know which version to get and to dedicate my time to. That is if the sale is still on! Thanks again for the advice though, as to be honest, if I had not seen this message, I wouold probably have forgotten all about the sale! :)
Everybody should buy the classic X games :)
And now we need Rebirth here.

I see 2 reasons to be optimistic regarding that :

a) the fact GOG themselves refer to the released games as "classic X" games might be a hint towards the availability of Rebirth at a later stage
b) from the start, Rebirth was less DRM intensive than the classics. Actually, aside from the Steam layer, there is no DRM on it. And Egosoft mentionned at some point that "a DRM-free version may be available at some point"

I agree. I never even thought the older games would come here with egosoft's new steam love with Albion Prelude. I'm glad i was wrong.
The first X, bought at the time of it's first release, was totally fascinating.

And boring.

True enough. I started with X2, and that one was quite a shock, and I ended up putting 500+ hours in it. probably more than any other game I ever played. Then I got X/X-tension as budget editions and... well, never actually enjoyed them. Now , I'm restarting X3 reunion.
