petitmal: Veni, vidi, huh?

or: Venimus, Vidimus, GOG vicit?

edit: add
"Venimus" is present, "Veniimus" is perfect.

drmike: It's the free oddworld mentioned earlier.

Someone on staff appears to have messed up.
Wow - you supersleuth you :)

If that is the case then what if you already own that game? They promised in their tease that "everyone" would come away with a special something. So, I'm guessing, and hoping, that there must be more to it than just a free game.

Previously they give you a gifting code and you hold on to it for eons until you can give it away to a newcomer.

edit: But good point. They did say everyone.

Which is hardly "special".
Well in theory we've 9-10 minutes to wait.

wonderfulillusion: There is no version of Windows that will allow you to play all existing games on GOG, nor any hardware in existence that is guaranteed to work with every existing game on GOG. Every game would have to be tested, and fixed, by hand. Who is footing the bill for this? Who is giving GOG the source code, and the permission to make changes?
So what do GOG use to test and get games working on now? Presumably they have a standard system for all.

avatar
wonderfulillusion: You can do literally everything you are suggesting by building a gaming PC and installing a dual boot of Windows 10 and your personal flavor of Linux. You can make it as cheap or expensive as you want, and it will run the games you want, at the resolutions you want, at the settings you want.
Or GOG could do it better for you.

avatar
wonderfulillusion: It will be cheaper, and upgradeable, and have all the functions of a normal PC. A GOG console is a solution in search of a problem that doesn't exist.
Cannot agree, the problems do exist. Read all about them in the many reviews here at GOG. It is also why so many just use a Console for games.
Many of those same problems by the way, have plagued PC Users all along, since the very first games.
Hardware is better now, and compatibility issues aren't as bad as they once were, but many are still there.

A note of thanks for the sale organization this time: making home-page category tabs for "Under $2" and "-80% & More" is much appreciated!

drmike: It's the free oddworld mentioned earlier.

Head over to the front page and hover over the facebook like link at the top of the page. you'll see it mentioned in the tooltip url.

Broken link:

share.php?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.gog.com%2F&title=FREE%20Oddworld%3A%20Abe%27s%20Oddysee%25dot%25GOG.com

The twitter link is for just the sale.

Someone on staff appears to have messed up.
Good Job !

Too bad I have that already :(

Leroux: I think the general consensus on what to expect is a free copy of Oddworld: Abe's Oddyssee at around 1 pm UTC. No guarantees though.
avatar
baalim: In that case, I'm sorry to say that it would be quite underwhelming.
Rule of thumb for dealing with GOG's marketing speech: The more excitement it tries to create, the more underwhelming the actual surprise usually is. ;)
So, whats now?

EDIT: Its Oddworld :(

Timboli: Unworkable idea [snip]
While others have pointed out why your idea simply wouldn't and couldn't possibly ever work, I'll just come up with a more positive counter-suggestion: GOG could partner with Microsoft to port these games to the Xbox One.

Fixed hardware would assist with the porting process, the OS isn't particularly foreign, the hardware is PC hardware. Pad support would be limited to the Xbox One controller, but USB keyboards and mice could work, in theory.

The GOG Selection on Xbox One.

Of course, it would be a bit like 2008 all over again, as games get ported across a couple at a time!

In other news, Abe's Oddysey is now free: https://www.gog.com/game/oddworld_abes_oddysee

Timboli: *snip*
Totally unrelated to topic, but I expected Harold to know more about PCs than Red. Even Dalton Humphries understood email better than he did!
It's Oddworld : Abe's Oddyssey.

It's shown on the front page banner. But the link to redeem it is broken and redirects to the homepage.

EDIT : They've fixed it. Game has now been added to my collection. Yay! :D
