dtgreene: Of course, as they approached the top of the staircase, things didn't quite go smoothly; all of the sudden Plum fell through some strange crack in the stairs; it's as if that one part of stairs isn't quite solid enough. Perhaps it was a cobweb that pushed Plum through the stairs.

Can Lilliana figure out how to rescue Plum? Or can Plum figure out a way out of the strange void area they ended up in?
Sarkozy, in the midst of all this chaos, had ran up the stairs to the dewy forest up above. While Liliana was trying to gaze down the pit and shouting, Sarkozy was up there playing in the forest. After about ten minutes, or so it seemed, Plum answered from below in a miserable voice. She Was in some sort of damp room down there, partially stuck in cobwebs. However, she was not alone, as already she had discovered a skeleton of some unfortunate adventurer sitting beside him, its backpack still on it. Lilliana asked Plum to wait while she searched for a way to rescue her.

Plum started going Through the backpack of her fellow skeleton, in hope of discovering something of use, or at least, some supplies. She found a lantern-like object among a surprisingly large gathering of knick-knacks. Plum, at that moment, became both afraid of the dark and of lighting the lantern, for she knew not what waited in that place forgotten by time itself. In a moment of desperation, she lit the apparatus, and a strange reddish light filled the entire place. Now in this gloomy light Plum saw sitting at the other end of the room a creature that looked just like her.
Plum was scared out of her wits, and out of fear started to retreat. At this point she realized that she could hardly move in that sea of spider web. She again looked at the one on the other side, and it struck her mind that she too was holding a lamp, just like her. It was a large mirror, covering an entire side of the room. Plum was both relieved and disturbed; the fact that it was a reflection did not warrant any sense of danger, yet there was something odd about it. It seemed to move, act and behave independently of Plum. Plum looked at the skeleton and wondered on the fate of that poor soul, while the face of that Other Plum filled with a malevolent laughter.

Meanwhile, Sarkozy had secured some vines and Lilliana tied them into a rope and threw it down into the pit. Plum was much relieved, and while eager to escape, she remembered to grab the lantern and the skeleton's backpack. While she was climbing up she looked at the face of the Other Plum and it appeared melancholy, and while she did not believe her own eyes, it as if tears were rolling down its cheek.

Lilliana and Sarkozy and Plum, all three of them re-united, climbed the rest of the stairs carefully. When they reached the valley, the sat down and thought of searching through the backpack.

The backpack was a fairly old model. They don't make backpacks like that any more. They don't withstand much use and abuse, and this one clearly suffered a lot. It had patches and fixes all around it but was still sturdy and capable of performing its duties. Its previous owner either could not afford a new bag or held it in great esteem. Plum thinks of the latter, remembering the image of the skeleton still grabbing the bag.

While her companions open and examine their newest find, her mind wanders off. Of its own volition it dives back down that chasm, imagining the previous life and fate of that stranger. For it was a stranger she knew nothing about, but the shared experience made her feel strangely close to him. Her? She wishes she knew more. Clearly luck favours some more than the others, and Plum was happy she was a preferred child, after all — something she never felt before, but here it is!
Was that creature alone? Did anyone missed him? Did he cry for help and was abandoned by his companions? Did death came about him quickly? Did he see it coming? Slowly approaching on 8 legs?

She shakes the thoughts away just before the end! Plum feels uncomfortable and uneasy. She feels a little itch that she scratches and enjoys the feeling of self-control that it brings her, and pushes away the helplessness that dominated her just a few minutes ago. She attains closure by removing some threads of webbing that were attached to her fur and turns her attention to her saviours.

“I'm just saying that five types of cheese seems silly! No reason can justify it! Clearly dim-witted.” says Sarkozy on a tone of authority on the subject.
“This journal says otherwise!”
“Well… nobody can understand what is says there! It can all be made-up! The works of a lunatic!” he throws.
“True…” Lilliana concedes. “It just looks too neat and organized…”

Plum joins the others. “May I see it?” she asks. When she opens it and sees the notes, she feels her hair stand up. Only it was not a reaction to what was written, it was a small number of spiders coming out of her fur. And one of them decides to bite.

If for: Age of Wonders 3, Sunless Sea, Brigador: Up-Armored Edition or X Rebirth: Home of Light Complete Edition.
Many thanks to Doc0075 for the generous and fun giveaway.

bhrigu presented some nice writing, yes. I'm just so-so. And I too should direct more time to the noble and time-honoured hobby of reading books.

BTW, I'm glad someone appreciated my effort.
I'm looking forward to the next scene.

I found your writing to be pretty good too, and of some others' who wrote on this thread.
I hope the story would go forward and we will see the unravelling of some mysteries.
Before we start unveiling mysteries, it's time for battle! It just happened that I googled "spider queen" and it seems there is a spider queen in Divinity OS1. Sooo...

-------------------
Plum grabs the little spider and throws it down. It is a disgusting red spider with two big spiked teeth that drip a green mucus. Plum crashes the spider with her boot and BOOM!!! Who knew that it was one of those spiders that explode upon death? The diary and the backpack are consumed in the explosion, the adventurers are slightly injured, and some flying webs pass next to them but fortunately they miss their target. As Liliana, Sarkozy and Plum turn around to see the attacker, they gasp in fear. It's a legendary monster and it's very angry. The Spider Queen in all its majesty!

------------------

PS: To the person who will continue from this point, don't forget the mage, was the name Ominous Tongue or something? And the borogrove of course:)

Liliana's heart faltered. The Spider Queen. She had heard some of the legends and rumors that surround this mythical beast. There is one rumor though that she always found curious. It is said that anyone who destroys one of her eggs will perish soon after. And where the Spider Queen lurks her eggs can't be too far away.

Liliana was not keen on finding out the truth about this myth. She turned towards her companions and shouted: "Run! And make sure you don't step on any spider eggs!". They ran as fast as their legs would carry them into the deeper parts of the forest where the Spider Queen could not move as fast as them due to the dense vegetation.

Suddenly Plum who was racing in front of Liliana stopped in her track almost making Liliana and Sarkozy run into her. In front of them was a small clearing full of small white orbs covered in cobwebs. Spider eggs. Behind them they could still hear the Spider Queen approaching who was still hunting them down. Plum turned toward Liliana and asked: "Any good ideas?"

Thanks Doc for another generous giveaway and congrats to all the winners! It was a bit difficult to become writers but we'll try to give an interesting end to this story just for the heck of it.

Don't worry, the number of pages will grow. As greeklover stated we will continue the story. :)

Also, kudos for conducting this wonderful GA.
Thank you for the game Doc. Hard to believe I win The Witcher 3

As for the story, I lack free time to follow but I'm very interested on how the journey will unfold. I missed a few last post and have to catch up, and hope people will continue contributing to the story. . I probably will contribute too if I got an interesting idea to add to the story, so don't worry about number of pages
Thanks for the lovely giveaway, Doc! And congrats to all the winners!

Here is the story so far:
https://docs.google.com/document/d/18pZfNZY3IAAz0jYHT3Ri6NLyACdOpwXwWRkSsvPg-aw/

I've locked the doc for now, even though the story could potentially be continued, it seems like a nice cliffhangery place to end it. They probably all died soon after. You never read stories where the adventurers made stupid mistakes and just totally utterly failed :P.

These sort of activities always are loads of fun for me to observe, especially the back and forth between the people who are "seriously" attempting a cogent narrative and try their best to extend their reach beyond the short passage they've assigned themselves, vs the people who are just in it for fun (and sometimes destruction :D).

I quite enjoyed this one!
