Just watched it - it was amazing.
I was very enthusiastic about the movie, but the more I see trailers, the more I want to avoid that movie. I will go see "the blind side" instead.

Shiny shiny visuals, but has anyone actually remembered the story?

I do. And I liked that story very much, or to be more precise I liked the characters, world and overall setting. I'm always fascinated by new more-or-less unique scifi/fantasy worlds that clearly have some effort put into making. Hollywood rarely makes any good settings these days. Which is why Anime comes to rescue. I've always liked japanese skill on merging new and old with different cultures to create original and detailed worlds and settings for stories.
My Review
I really didn't like this film. Yes, it's pretty but there are plenty of better looking films that came out this year that didn't need to spend millions on CGI.
Got to watch it tonight, Amazing movie. If you have a choice to see it in 3D do so, even if its an extra couple of bucks its worth it.

Are you saying better titles in 2009 related to what?
To the techniques used (titles with best use of cinematography, photography, etc. and more artistic value)? or that there are better pure CGI films than avatar?
EDIT: I've read your review and it's OK, I agree that the story of Avatar isn't all that original.
And I've noticed that you cited 2 or 3 times "a thirteen year old movie", is it a coincidence with Avatar being rated PG-13 or it's on purpose? Because I think that Cameron only dumbed it down (with a black vs. white, good vs. evil, a scheme being easier to digest as it is pure entertainment) to get more audience available to go see avatar, and help him pay his $500 Million costs with this movie.

The visuals excites me, but the trailers shows me something far too generic to be worth my time. Since I will buy a PS3 in January, I guess I will rent this film on Blu-ray when it comes out.

You'll rent it for $10, and by that time you'll have a 60'' 3D-ready HDTV, and already with the PS3 firmware update for using 3D? It costs a lot to have the quality of a 3D theater, at home.
Man, just go to the nearest cinema and spend that same $10 to watch it. Even more if there is a 3D cinema near you. ;)

Agreed. While I do intend picking this up on Blu-Ray as soon as it is released, it is completely worth it to see it in theaters with 3D. This is the first movie that does it exceptionally well. It's more immersive than gimmicky.

Ink, Treeless Mountain, Two Lovers
These are more for artistic, aesthetic beauty and less for epic scale.

Ink sucked. People have their likes and dislikes, though, which is why I love Avatar and some people hate it.
Making of the Avatar bootleg.
Avatar felt like FernGully for adults. Hating on industrialists is so 20th century. Eh.
