I just saw the movie today in IMAX 3D. Holy shit. I can only say that.
Holy. Shit.
The movie is just amazing, everything from the sheer scale of the production to the amazing detail put into the world, from languages to the creatures and plants, it's so obvious that James Cameron thought this through for years.

they made quite a few bob for $460m :D btw best CGI to date
It's interesting that when you adjust for inflation, all these recent big hits like World's End and Avatar barely make the top 30...
Gone with the Wind FTW!
While I was rather blown away watching avatar, now, 5 days later, I can't help be feel disappointed that they made such an amazing world and did so little with it. If it had had an original memorable plot it'd have been an all time classic... but even now I've mostly forgotten it.

Yea its a shame they didn't bother putting together something slightly more original. It was an amazing cinema experiance, especially in 3d(watched it 3 times) but I'm not even sure I'll pick it up on dvd when its out.
Avatar's DVD and BD will be out soon, April 22.

I've had the Blu Ray on order since Amazon.jp started taking pre-orders for it.
This movie still reminds me of the "Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger" music video.
I freakin hate this movie.

Loved this whole scene, and the film's start scene in space:

Looks like all the big guys are going 3D, in the next 2 or 3 years:
Avatar 2 (and possible Titanic re-release in 3D)
Ridley Scott's Alien, two prequel films
Scorsese
Paul Greengrass
Spielbierg, Tintin
The Hobbit, two films
Tron: Legacy, three films
Men in Black 3
Star Wars trilogy, release in Blu-ray by 2012 (and rumored re-release in 3D cinemas).
etc.
About to get this movie for DVD. From what I hear this movie is only good on IMAX, otherwise it sucks. Which means on DVD I only see true action and true story, not pure 3d glitz. If this movie sucks on DVD then it's a shit movie with tons of graphics, and games like that tend to get low reviews and generally suck themselves................

I didn't see it in the theater. Picked it up on Blu-ray and I must say the visuals are gorgeous. Well worth the price for that alone, IMO.
I can imagine in the theater (especially in 3D), it must have been spectacular. That being said, as many others have noted, the story is very average and cliched. I'm a big fan of Giovanni Ribisi and I really like Sigourney Weaver, but I was disappointed in both of them. I think it had more to do with very little to work with script-wise than anything else, but I just didn't think they were all that good in the movie.
Absolutely stunning visuals. Very average story/script, but not so bad as to make the movie an overall bad experience. But it could have been so much more.

Coelocanth: But it could have been so much more.

Just what I needed to hear, won't waste my money. Might buy a few GOG's instead here and I'll watch a screener of Avatar.

This sentence is so true... regarding the story.
It is good, but nothing spectacular as its visual spectacle.

I did a quick search here, and the dvd is $16, bd is $20. Don't buy the dvd, this movie deserves a blu-ray player. ;)
Avatar will be re-released in the theaters in the coming months, with like 10 minutes of extra footage. So save your dvd money, and go watch it in a 3D cinema for $16; much better spent IMO. ;)

The graphics in Avatar are truly remarkable and a great accomplishment.
Unfortunately, just about everything else about the movie is a dismal disappointment. The story, the characters, the "science", the childish moralizing... all awful.
Rent this one, or go see it at a friend's place. Don't waste your money buying it.

Actually, I'd recommend just renting the DVD/BR now, then buying the version they'll release later in the year. As much as I like the movie, the BR version they are selling right now was a bit of a let down.
At least here, you can't buy the BR on its own, so you end up with a BR and DVD versions of the exact same thing. There are zero extras, which is where the real disappointment comes. They could have at least added a commentary or two to the BR version like the other packages here that force you to buy both the BR and DVD when all you want is the BR.
