I'd love to play board games, but it seems I'm very much in the minority. So my board games gather dust.

visit Torun one day, so we'll play :-)
Or Warsaw... I know dozens of board gamers here :)
I love Twilight Sruggle.

I can't understand the phenomena of this game. Two people draw cards and place points on a map. Don't see anything exciting here, especially because it's 2 players only :P

I use to play it with my girlfriend :-p

I think it´s one of the best 2p only board games ever made.

I don't like winning board games with my gf :P It doesn't seem all that rewarding later at night, if you know what I mean...

That depends on how "good" she is, if the number of victories/loses is somehow balanced It use to help to get in the mood. Of course, I never play chess with her :-p

Well, I'm a gamer, she's not. So for now, it looks like the win/loose balance is even at a start. But when I get to know a game better, I think I use my experience with video games to develop tactics, think ahead, etc and I start winning every single game.

It's not that fun. I'm not playing to win, but I can't give handicaps to her, because that would make it even less entertaining :P

1vs1 games are cool. I like them, but they require people on very even levels to be most fun.

Although in games that require some general knowledge or smarts, like Scrabble, I fail horribly :P I'm better in tactical games.

If you aren't giving it your all, no wonder you aren't having fun. And I doubt she is, either. Whenever I play a game with anyone (including my nieces and nephew), I give it 100%. And when they do beatme (and they do), they get legimiately excited because they know that beat me straight up without me holding anything back.

Also, Twilight Struggle is fantastic. :)

Yeah, but on the other hand, if I give 100%, I win very early. And it's not that fun either.

What I'm trying to do, is to give my gf some advice on tactics while we play, so she gets better every time we play. In fact, I lost today, and we battled to the last card. And it was awesome.

I don't mind loosing at all, as long as it was a close, engaging and demanding battle. ;)

By the way, what about the new game? That about terrorism? It's the same as Twilight Struggle but with more modern setting.

Oh, I do that as well against the kids or someone new. absolutely nothing wrong with giving advice and such. The important thing is, of course, that you have fun. If you're both enjoying yourselves, that's the goal.

Labyrinth is quite a bit more complicated than Twilight Struggle, actually. TS is fairly even since you're both playing as a global superpower. Labyrinth is completely asymmetric. Once of you is the US, the other is the terrorists. So you almost have to learn two completely different games, because both factions have different goals and play styles.
I am glad to announce my board games collection has grown into the number of 7 and me and my friends are playing every week. I am very happy, those board games can give much more joy of playing than video games, if played with people you really like.

And it's even though I usually loose :P

The next game I buy will be the bigger title. Probably Pandemic (new edition) and Battlestar Galactica.

Nice! So what all do you have now?

Scrabble, the hobbit, carcassonne, forbidden island, and 3 Polish games you probably do not know :P

I think it's pretty solid as a "starter set", because the games are very easy to teach and ideal for short sessions.
