You can play Heroes III on Tunngle with me Ginno! I need someone to play with! :D
I like shooters, I won't deny it, but I also like other genres.
I love old style point and click adventures which is why I'm happy that GOG is bringing so many of them, though I understand that some get frustrated by it. I also love RPG's which is why I still have my big box editions of Baldurs Gate 2 and Planescape Torment as well as Fallout 1 and 2. I think personally if anyone plays just one genre of game you can get bored of it.

DosFreak: As far as variety there are thousands upon thousands of PC games out there.

8BitGinno: Yeah, this is the reason why I'm leaning towards PC gaming as of lately. Lots of variety games. :)
I just wish I grew up with them. I grew up with Nintendo systems, and not too many people seem to play SNES anymore.

Factor in XBLA and there's great variety on the XBOX.
The reason not too many people play SNES anymore is because the world has moved on, and there are now better systems available.
I like shooters because I can just jump in when I have a few spare minutes, join a server and have some fun with some friends and then drop out and go with my business without killing the contractor with whom I happen to be working that day.
Compare that to a RPG or RTS where I need to sink more time into to get a feeling of being rewarded by the game and you'll understand why FPSs are so popular.
Woah, quite a few posts..
@ AlexY
I'll look into it. I wouldn't mind a classic RTS. :)
@ stonebro
Just because there are newer systems, doesn't mean they are better. A great game is great game, regardless of how long it has existed. Like I've stated before, games released for consoles nowadays seem to be lacking in quality and variety, being replaced with graphics and violence.
@ AndrewC
I agree, shooters are probably the easiest to get into and out whenever needed, and just about anyone can. One might even say it's the casual gamer's genre if there had to be one.

captfitz: hi "Does anyone play anything besides shooters anymore?" thread,
meet "Have FPS's lost it's magic?" thread

Now you've done it! Having been introduced, those threads might get together and start having babies!

Bingo: the main reason why I mostly play shooters these days is that I just don't have much time for games.
Particularly when I have around 500GB of games on Steam and GOG, even before counting the older games on CD; I can't spend hundreds of hours on a single game anymore.
I thought shooter was the only category...=(
No, I play tons of simulations and war games, and a few indie and flash games. Prefer RPGS though since shooters tend to get generic and boring...RPGs have no room to talk though.
I just finished playing Batman: Arkham Asylum which is a pretty damn good (and popular) 3rd person non-shooter action/stealth game.
Telltale is apparently profiting from their Sam & Max and Monkey Island seasons.
Never been into RTS games myself, but I know a bunch of people crazy about Starcraft 2.
Can't think of any recent and popular "pure" RPG though. Though I guess you could say Mass Effect 2 has the actual role playing aspect down, though it seems to have tossed most of the standard elements of the genre out the window. But hey, there are always freeware roguelikes :)

movieman523: Me too. Hell, that's probably the reason I keep putting off playing Mass Effect, Oblivion, Gothic 2-3, Stonekeep, Arx Fatalis, and even KOTOR!

I play Trauma Team co-op all the time but that doesn't seem to be what you're asking for since it's local multiplayer. But I bring it up because it has six styles of gameplay and none of them are shooters. Just saying.
Well, I'm still playing the Flashback platform right now, so what? I've installed and plan to play Mirror's Edge soon, after all it's a platform with a "first person" view of the game's world. And it's very, very nice, for what I've seen till now....
