Hey all, name's 8BitGinno and I'm a gamer.
Thing is, I'm a gamer of variety. I love playing RPG, Adventure, Platforming, FPS, and more recently RTS games. Games of the FPS, Racing, Fighting genres being played occasionally. Really, any games that are fun regardless of the game type; innovation being a key factor also.
I would also like to enjoy multiplayer games with people, but alas all pursuit of such has been to no avail. Why? Because all anyone seems to play are FPS games. The fact that FPS games are the "in" thing now, which is why that is all they seem to release nowadays, and seemingly are lacking in variety, story, etcetera, has left a sour taste in my mouth. A genre which I could have gotten more into is unappealing as it once was, causing me to generally prefer retro gaming. Yes, I mentioned I too also enjoy shooters, but it is only every so often. They tend to be PvP and fast paced games, which is loads of fun, but I wish to change-it-up sometimes and would rather not get stressed due to them being very competitive in nature. My requests at various sites for a companion to play some games with tend to go unheard due to my preference of classic/different games, and I lack games to play with people on Steam or VPNs like Tunngle.
In conclusion, where has all the variety gone? And where are the people that enjoy it?

You replied to the thread title. The actual topic for discussion is probably more geared towards the questions posted at the bottom of the first post. ;)
-Double-click Starcraft 2 Beta desktop icon.
-Enter Battle.Net account information.
-Click Multiplayer.
-Click Find Match.
-Fun!
There you go, a RTS game.
-Click Start.
-Click Games.
-Double-click Syberia 2 icon.
There you go, an Adventure game.
See? There are people who play other genres too. Its not all about FPS, but yes, games with most press are FPS nowadays, with exceptions, like Blizzard's games for example.
Oh, and they make more multiplayer FPS games because there is more money in multiplayer, which really sucks most of the times (I have to agree with you here).

You can blame the XBOX for that.
As far as variety there are thousands upon thousands of PC games out there. There's no problem with variety as long as you don't limit yourself to new games.

Yeah, this is the reason why I'm leaning towards PC gaming as of lately. Lots of variety games. :)
I just wish I grew up with them. I grew up with Nintendo systems, and not too many people seem to play SNES anymore.
Not really, I'm currently playing:
- Hearts of Iron 3 (Hardcore strategy/wargame)
- UFO Extraterrestrials (Clone of X-COM with a few major changes that suck)
- Simcity 4
- Tropico 3 (Sim/building)
- Sam and Max S3 (Adventure)
- Company of Heroes (RTS, Co-op with friends)
- Temple of Elemental Evil (D&D RPG)
Well yeah, I'm replaying Call of Duty 1 for the 6th time, but that's an FPS 7 years old, I can't be bothered with the newer FPSes.
Starcraft 2 custom games are easily as fun as SC1 UMS maps, and they're just getting started.
<3 SC2

+1 to that!

either you a) don't own an xbox or b) are a regular troll. I'll assume the first. 1/2 of my games on xbox are shooters, because I enjoy playing them in my easychair. The other ones are games like mass effect, kameo and dragon age.
try researching or at least thinking before you post mindless drivel.
hi "Does anyone play anything besides shooters anymore?" thread,
meet "Have FPS's lost it's magic?" thread
I think the FPS genre is experiencing a slow down recently, not dominance.
As for your question, I play all types of games apart from pure puzzle games.
Here is a screenshot of my desktop and the games I have installed. As you can see, no lack of other games than FPS.

I, for one, play more (MMO)RPGs or TBS over FPS games.
If you want to play multiplayer their are plenty of RTS's and mmo's to play. And their are still tons of good non fps singleplayer games.
I play all types of game although i am a rpg or rts fan over fps.In fact just came off playing napolean total war.
