I just finished playing Batman: Arkham Asylum which is a pretty damn good (and popular) 3rd person non-shooter action/stealth game.
Telltale is apparently profiting from their Sam & Max and Monkey Island seasons.
Never been into RTS games myself, but I know a bunch of people crazy about Starcraft 2.
Can't think of any recent and popular "pure" RPG though. Though I guess you could say Mass Effect 2 has the actual
role playing aspect down, though it seems to have tossed most of the standard elements of the genre out the window. But hey, there are always freeware roguelikes :)
AndrewC: Bingo: the main reason why I mostly play shooters these days is that I just don't have much time for games.
Particularly when I have around 500GB of games on Steam and GOG, even before counting the older games on CD; I can't spend hundreds of hours on a single game anymore.
movieman523: Me too. Hell, that's probably the reason I keep putting off playing Mass Effect, Oblivion, Gothic 2-3, Stonekeep, Arx Fatalis, and even KOTOR!
