Trilarion: Since it seems to not exist as download I would advice to buy it offline.

http://www.ebay.com/sch/Video-Games-/139973/i.html?_from=R40&Platform=PC&Genre=Strategy&_dcat=139973&LH_ItemCondition=1000&LH_BIN=1&_nkw=civilization+2&LH_PrefLoc=3

But since the rights would be at Take 2 (my guess) it would certainly be interesting to ask them why there isn't a download.

Personally I can understand people falling back to an abandonia site when the game is not available as download or box for a reasonable price but in this case you can still buy an untouched box for a reasonable price.

Here is even a jewel case:

I would recommend trying to track down Civ 2 gold or Civilization Chronicles. The expansions give you plenty of scenarios and more importantly it allows you to play far more user generated content
One thing I would add is to stay away from picking up a copy of 'vanilla' Civ II, as the original release is 16 bit and you won't be able to install it on a 64 bit operating system. I can confirm though, that I was able to install a retail version of Civ II Gold (which is 32 bit) on my Windows 7 64 bit laptop and it worked perfectly after using mastermind's 64 bit patch and installing the indeo drivers (both mentioned earlier in the thread)
For alternatives, look at 0 AD:
play0ad.com

They have also made a mod for AOE II:

Mentioned earlier in this tread.

Site downloads slow unless you pay $5.95/day or $8.95/month. Do the month, worth it. I think this is what GOG used to be??? They have the 64-bit patch. Go for the multiplayer gold edition if you pay, the smaller if you don't.

I used this site a while back before i started using GOG.
No, GOG was always legit to the best of my knowledge.

keeveek: I recommend trying

FreeCiv

it has Civ2 mechanics in options afaik. Better graphics and UI though.
I was going to post that.

On top of that, you get the choice of rule sets, IIRC, they have Civ I, Civ II and their own rules to play with. Plus, the portable version doesn't even need to be installed.

I'm pretty sure that I still have a copy of Civ II sitting around here and I never play it because FreeCiv addresses most of the annoyances.

JMich: Old Games (both com and sk, and Abandonia, and quite a few more) are "abandonware" sites, meaning they make the games available without the owners consent (but also without the owners complaining). GOG has asked us before not to link to those sites, since trying to convince the rights holder that going DRM-Free while the users give a way to pirate the games in the forum isn't the best thing.

I know that you were trying to help, but be aware that linking those sites isn't good for GOG.
This is unfortunately true and is something that needs to be addressed by legislation. It's absurd to have so much culture disappearing so that Disney can retain the copyright to things that were produced in the 40s and 50s.

Games in particularly generally only have a lifespan of a decade or so. Sure, there are exceptions, but they represent a very small fraction of the total games produced. And even those games that are worth buying later, those are the same games where the developer has already earned a tidy profit in most cases.

You could also just buy it somewhere and immediately after sending the money downloading from an abandonia site. This would actually come close to a download. It might not be legal, but morally satisfying because nobody is harmed. Even without an explicit link such a download should be fairly easy to google.
