Holy Shit.... X: Beyond the Frontier AND X-Tension -- seriously GOG get in on this... i'll wait for a little bit but i want this more then a super model naked on my couch and my wife on a holiday!

this is the greatest space opera ever in the existence of ANYTHING.. and holy crapazord im loving the GamersGate stuff....

They have an amazing selection og DRM free stuff.... Now once bought is it truly DRMfree? you need no internet at all... download the installer and if i wanted i could move it to my latop and install and run it without the internet?
Post edited March 08, 2011 by Starkrun
It's not really DRM-free because the installer must connect to the internet. On many games, however, you can just backup the setup and the temporary files during the installation, making them really drm-free.

The first X games are there because of the recent X Superbox, which includes everything. They just went on and put them separately as well.

I kind of wonder why you can't get Gothic 1 alone on GG or Steam, though it's there on the Gothic Universe pack. Well, just another reason to wait for a good sale on GOG, even though I have Gothic 2 and 3 on Steam.

It's time for updating this thread.

March 2011

GOG

GOG has worldwide only $ prices, conversion according to actual rate 1€=1.4$.

Might & Magic 7: For Blood And Honor - 4.3€ - 6$
Heroes of Might and Magic 4: Complete - 7.1€ - 10$
Battle Isle Platinum - 7.1€ - 10$
Might & Magic 8: Day Of Destroyer - 4.3€ - 6$
Rayman Forever - 4.3€ - 6$
XIII - 4.3€ - 6$

I remember especially M&M 7 as well as Battle Isle to be excellent games. And the prices of the games are competitive as always.

DotEmu

€ prices are with german IP, $ prices with american IP. Average conversion rate 1€:1.3$ which is quite fair.

Disciple: Sacred Lands - 4€ - 5$
Patrician III - 7.5€ - 10$
Port Royale 2 - 4€ - 5$
Jagged Alliance 2 Gold Edition - 7.5€ - 10$

Nothing really new. Nothing you can't buy here. But prices are actually around the same as here, sometimes even a little cheaper. I like this development.

GamersGate

€ prices are with german IP, $ prices with american IP. Average conversion rate is very, very close to 1:1 (while the € is now even stronger than one month before).... outrageous.

Theatre of War 2:Centauro (Expansion) - 19€ - 20$
Theatre of War 2: Battle for Caen (Expansion) - 10€ - 10$
Theatre of War 2: Battle for Caen Special Edition (Standalone) - 24€ - 25$
Europa Universalis III Chronicles (Compilation) - 30€ - 30$
Mega Race 1 - 5€ - 5$
Mega Race 2 - 5€ - 5$
Darkest Hour: A Hearts of Iron Game (HoI 2 Clone) - 10€ - 10$

I really don't like their price policy. It's completely unfair and penalizes Europeans which pay 40% more (the € is 1.4$ not 1$)!!!

I therefore strongly recommend for Europeans not to buy on GamersGate for the moment.

Well with GamersGate I always backup the installer right after download and before setup starts. It worked in every case I tried it and I am not aware of anything forbidden about it. However, someday I might want to check with them personally. Otherwise they might not qualify for real DRM free.

It would be impossible for you to manage, but I wonder how many DRM free retail games come out every month. I buy everything in a box when I can and it seems like most titles which are not from the top 3 or 4 publishers are DRM-free.

This is an excellent idea, but I don't know how to do it. Which sites to browse and how to find out, what is new and what DRM model they have, ... or it might be country specific (nightmares ahead!). In the end it would be a Herculian task for somebody. However really useful for some people.

Use the UK site. The prices there seem reasonable. At least at 70% off. :p

Yeah I know, like I said it would be impossible for one person. It's a shame there is no database of such a thing though.

Seconded. I don't know if they force Europeans to use Her Majesty's Pounds, however.

Don't make fun of the Queen.

I checked it a while ago and if I wasn't mistaken, the prices for Europeans were not much better, sometimes even worse for the games listed here, i.e. just published and labeled DRM free. I guess, it's only better for AAA titles then.

Yes. As an example for how difficult it is:

This is an exceptional good offer for strategy gamers:
http://www.amazon.com/Sid-Meiers-Civilization-IV-Complete-Pc/dp/B0026EGO3A

Civ 4 + 2 AddOns + Civ 4 Colonization completely DRM free on a disk in a box for currently 25$ which although it's an older game it's absolutely worth it! This means you really own it, you can sell it, you can pass it on to your kids and they to their kids, ... whatever you want really. Backup is possible and a nice box for collecting plus backup on disk are already included.

However there are problems
- price: Steam has offered the same bundle with their usual DRM for afaik at least 30% less, although only temporarily at christmas or so
- regional restriction: it's only available in North America, Europe has the less expensive but DRM full version only (it's called the ultimate edition - there is also a complete edition in Europe with DRM which is less complete than the ultimate edition which is equivalent to North America's complete edition only with additional DRM but less expensive ... f*** them)
- not a search property: you cannot search in online stores like amazon for non-digital DRM less games which makes all such searches too much effort :(

Anyway let's continue with the April 2011 list of downloadable only games labeled DRM free from sites like GOG, DotEmu and GamersGate.

GOG

GOG has worldwide only $ prices, conversion according to actual rate 1€=1.48$.

Realms of the Haunting - 4.1€ - 6$
Guilty Gear X2 Reload - 4.1€ - 6$
Alone in the Dark 1+2+3 - 4.1€ - 6$
Star Control 1+2 - 4.1€ - 6$
Desperados: Wanted Dead or Alive - 4.1€ - 6$
Dungeons & Dragons: Dragonsheart - 6.8€ - 10$

Really good prices for some really good games.

DotEmu

€ prices are with german IP, $ prices with american IP. Average conversion rate 1€:1.3$ which is still not so bad.

688(I) Hunter Killer - 7.5€ - 10$
Dangerous Waters - 7.5€ - 10$
Sub Command - 7.5€ - 10$
The Abbey - 7.5€ - 10$
Pro Pinball Timeshock - 4€ - 5$
Pro Pinball Big Race USA - 4€ - 5$
Jagged Alliance - 4€ - 5$
Broken Sword 2 Remastered - 5€ - 5$
Sacred Gold - 7.5€ - 10$
Disciples 2 Gold - 7.5€ - 10$
Guilty Gear Isuka - 4€ - 6$
O.R.B.: Off-World Ressource Base - 4€ - 5$

Some re-releasing of old stuff, but also some new stuff that GOG hasn't. DotEmu increases the number of games that it has and GOG hasn't.

GamersGate

€ prices are with german IP, $ prices with american IP. Average conversion rate 1€:1.2$ this time but still not acceptable, since their overall prices are quite often 1:1.

Redneck Racers - 10€ - 10$
Armoured and Dangerous - 5€ - 7$
Hunt - 9€ - 10$
Digitanks - 9€ - 13$
Airport Control Simulator - 10€ - 10$

In my opinion: nothing interesting here, just overpriced crap. Especially Hunt a hunting simulator/shooter looks like even in 1995 nobody would have liked it.

Here is the list for May 2011

Except Witcher 2 nothing really blockbuster-like. All is niche, casual or indie (or paradox).

GOG

GOG has worldwide only $ prices, conversion according to actual rate 1€=1.44$.

Forgotten Realms: Demon Stone - 6.9€ - 10$
Dragonsphere - free
The Witcher: Enhanced Edition Director's Cut - 6.9€ - 10$
Moto Racer 2 - 4.2€ - 6$
The Witcher 2: Assasins of Kings - 50€ (16$ store credit) - 50$
Spellforce 2: Shadow of Wars - 6.9€ - 10$
Rayman 2: The Great Escape - 4.2€ - 6$

Moto Racer 2 is actually a re-release. European customers of TW2 will get a credit of 16$ which is about the difference between 50€ and 50$.

DotEmu

€ prices are with german IP, $ prices with american IP. Average conversion rate 1€:1.16$ which is not fair at all.

Jagged Alliance: Deadly Games - 4€ - 5$
A Vampyre Story - 7.5€ - 10$
Litil Divil - 4€ - 5$
Ufo Aftermath - 5€ - 6$
Fairy Tale about Father Frost, Ivan and Nastya - 9€ -10$
Darkstar One - 7.5€ - 10$
Silverfall - 10€ - 10$
Runaway 2: The Dream Of the Turtle - 10€ - 10$
Irem Arcade Hits - Hammerin Harry/Dragon Breed - each 2€ - each 2$

Nothing really interesting here for me.

GamersGate

€ prices are with german IP, $ prices with american IP. Average conversion rate 1€:1.02$ which is not acceptable! For the overwhelming cases, you pay the same amount of € or of $ despite the € having 44% more value at the current time. This is like cheating on European customers and I will not support this.

Empires & Dungeons 2: The Sultanate (Standard Edition) - 9€ - 10$
Empires & Dungeons 2: The Sultanate (Premium Edition) - 13€ - 15$
Capsized - 10€ - 10$
Ancient Empires Lux - 10€ - 10$
American History Lux - 7€ 7$
The Three Musketeers Extended Edition - 10€ - 10$
Cities in Motion - 20€ - 20$
King Arthur Collection - 30€ - 30$
The A.Typical RPG - 2€ - 3$
Terrorist Takedown 3 - 10€ - 10$
Operation Thunderstorm - 10€ - 10$
Code of Honour 3 - Desperarte Measures - 20€ - 20$
Art of Murder - Cards of Destiny - 20€ - 20$
Combat Zone Special Forces - 20€ - 20$

Some pretty casual games (although not labeled casual) and some generic shooters. Empires & Dungeons 2 actually is from a one man indie developer company and the developer state that the best way to support him is to buy directly from his website (instead of e.g. GamersGate):

Sure, as if CDs will survive much longer! The era of physical media is coming to an end, sorry!

You forgot the free 1 out of 5 RPG for preordering. Or a free game of your choice if you had all RPGs already, equaling another 6 or 10$ saved.

You mean there will be absolutely no more books or Blu-Rays or printed money or printed newspapers or magazines in say ... 10 years from now? I doubt that although I agree that delivering these things electronically will increase strongly. But still, a DVD without DRM (and Civ 4 Complete is such an example) has a distinct advantage that downloads never have, the resellability and ownership. Physical things you can own, pure downloads you cannot. Physical things without DRM you actually really own. And pressing/shipping a DVD is not that expensive. Surely more expensive than a download, but for a stable mature game (like extended/GOTY/whatever edition) I would be willing to pay the litte five bucks extra. I really would like to see DRM free physical media to stay at least as a niche market for me. I don't care what others do.

June 2011

GOG

GOG has worldwide only $ prices, conversion according to actual rate 1€=1.45$.

Ultima Underworld 1+2 - 4.1€ - 6$
Dungeon Keeper - 4.1€ - 6$
Wing Commander: Privateer - 4.1€ - 6$
Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri - 4.1€ - 6$
Crusader: No Remorse - 4.1€ - 6$
Magic Carpet - 4.1€ - 6$
Litil Divil - 4.1€ - 6$
Heroes Chronicles: All Chapters - 6.9€ - 10$
Spellforce 2: Dragon Storm - 6.9€ - 10$
SWAT 3 GOTY - 6.9€ - 10$

June was a good month for GOG. A lot of good games. Only more expansions included and sometimes lesser prices would be nice.

DotEmu

€ prices are with german IP, $ prices with american IP. Average conversion rate 1€:1.36$ which is okay.

Slipstream 5000 - 4€ - 6$
Soulbringer - 4€ - 6$
Ufo AfterShock - 9€ - 10$
Eurofighter Tycoon - 4€ - 6$
Hardwar - 4€ - 6$

Wow, even some original games (i.e. not available on GOG) for a price that is good also for european customers. Thumbs up.

GamersGate

€ prices are with german IP, $ prices with american IP. Average conversion rate 1€:1$ which is crap

Egypt the Prophecy Part 1,2,3 - 7€/$ each
Nostradamus the Last Prophecy Part 1,2,3 - 7€/S each
Versailles II - Testament of the King - 10€/S
Louvre - The Messenger - 10€/S
Astral Towers - 10€/$

Conversion rate is crap, First four seems to be generic (crappy) adventures from Anuman, last one is an Indie strategy game but the companies website does not say a single word about it, so the online mode of the game might not make that much fun. All in all: worst month for GamersGate since the beginning of this list.

Only one bright spot: DRM free HoI3 DLC "For the Motherland" released which would be in the list if it wouldn't be an add-on.

For discs I expect an end in the next 20 to 50 years (note that in my opinion there will be other transportable media, though, but the retail system will quite die out in favor of companies that send on order what can't be downloaded - only basics will stay like supermarkets), for books in around 50 to 200 years. I think every human will have easy access to online banking by then (the VeriChip will fail btw but there are other security methods).
