Tarm: Probably too niche market for GOG to release more than the biggest known, easiest to get to work and cheapest of them. For example I'd love to have Wargame Construction Set here but how many copies would it sell? My guess is too few for GOG to put much effort into it. Another example is the V For Victory games by Atomic Games Inc. I'd be ecstatic if GOG released them but chances seem low. :(
I wish they would at least dare to try. Wargame Construction Set , Tanks! , Rifles from SSI would imho still be tempting. V for Victory from 360 pacific, maybe. Now, can they get the rights ? that something else entirely. Matrix still lists many "updated" SSG , Battlegrounds and some SSI titles

I think there's a real market for old wargames and more niche strategy games. Wargamers tend to be older, set in their ways and VERY nostalgic about old classic wargames. So I think GOG have a real chance of getting a lot of wargamers here if they made a effort to release said game genre.
I just have to mention another game series. The old Battlefront games like Panzer Battles. What gems they are in game design!

Edit: Matrix can go suck a.... Their prices are just insane. I bet that's why we won't get games from them here on GOG.

Ryan333: Maybe "real-time" isn't quite the right term. What I meant was that when I played Eye of the Beholder, if I just sat there and didn't react fast enough the enemies would repeatedly attack me. Maybe "turned based with a time limit"?

Crispy78: Eye Of The Beholder isn't a 'Gold Box' game.
That's true; Eye of the Beholder was its own series with black marble boxes, and only the first one with the classic Gold Box sized box. They did make a version for the gameboy advance, however, that was like a cross between the original computer version with the combat engine from the Gold Box series.
That one's worth seeking out a GBA unit and the game. It's that good.

Ryan333: I'll probably be branded a heretic by some, but I really didn't care for the old SSI Gold Box D&D games even though I'm a huge CRPG fan. The two biggest hang-ups I had with them were (1) lack of an auto-map and (2) party-based combat that was real-time/non-pause. At least... I think they were all real-time. Were any of them pauseable?

I much prefer games like Baldur's Gate or Fallout over the classic SSI games. But I still have to tip my hat to the Gold Box series. Even if I didn't care for the style, they were very influential and well-designed games in their own right.

When I was in college, I had SSI's Eye of the Beholder on my old MS-DOS 386 system. I didn't play it much, but this guy who lived down the hall from me in the dorm was constantly coming over asking if he could play. I kind of felt sorry for him because his parents were outrageously rich, yet they sent him off to college without a car, computer, TV, stereo... or pretty anything other than a few sets of clothes. Although I finally drew the line when I went to bed one night and told him he could keep playing for a bit... and then woke up the next morning to find him still sitting there at my computer. He was kind of like a hipster-doofus version of Sheldon from The Big Bang Theory -- nowhere near as smart but every bit as oblivious to how socially inept he was. Whenever I think about an SSI Gold Box game, I can still see him sitting there at my computer, completely engrossed with Eye of the Beholder.
1. The games had Area View for most maps.
2. They were turn based, not real time. Eye of the Beholder was pure real time, though.

But cool story about your college friends, so I won't dowrep you.

Their price are insane, and are not tax inclusive, they do not often have sales and when they do the discounts are meager... but they have a nice catalogue with some significant IP's : Close Combat, Steel Panthers, Bettleground series, Battlefront , Panzer Corps.

However , thy have at least 3 free games ...

Yes they have almost a monopoly on old wargames and that's probably why they can get away with those prices.

Thank you for the tip about the free games. Downloading time. :)
