Crassmaster: And hasn't Blizzard said you will need to log in to their service to play Starcraft 2?

IIRC yes, and no LAN play for SC2. I wonder how secure the Blizzard store will be, and probably the ActiBlizz store will be the same platform or even the same site.
Indeed it is the new way that games are going, I see this for some time now. The hole digital distribution thing, this DLC crap even on launch day, and all kinds of drm coming out every f* day.

Paul_cz: We really have to treasure gog..it is the alone island if sanity in the ocean of insane.

Indeed.
It appears that older DRM methods that we found unpalatable are being replaced with "service" based ones, like GFWL, Steam and the EA and Ubisoft equivalents. Oddly enough, I find these new methods far worse, and far more intrusive than old disc checks, cd-keys and the like.
I pity those without reliable internet connections, for they will soon be second class PC gamers.
[edit] the Blizzard situation appears to be GFWL like, in that you can create an offline account to play your games (Starcraft 2 and Diablo 3), but you won't be able to access whatever benefits the Bnet system offers (DLC? Achievements? Multiplayer (obviously))

Crassmaster: This can't really strike anyone as surprising. I mean, EA has already been leaning in this direction with needing to log in to the community site to access any and all DLC.

You only need to login once. It's similar to GOG. :P

This is the way things are heading. Publishers aren't willing to release games DRM-free, and things like disc checks become increasingly irrelevant as more and more games are purchased digitally.

Last time i played dragon age origins,I didn't need to log in or be online to play with dlc.
To download the dlc yes i had to be logged in for that.
Sometimes it does say i don't own the dlc that i do own.
Which can be fix just by restarting the game. Worked for me 100% of the time.
The thing ea loves to do with dlc right now is give you a 15$ dlc for free, if you buy the game new.
Sometimes there is a good reason be hide this.
Like the stone prisoner dlc.
It was going to be part of dao, to many bugs so they remove the stone prisoner.
Then the game got delay.
With more time on there hands they fix the bugs in the stone prisoner.
unable for some reason i can't remember right now, to place the stone prisoner on the disk.So they made it a dlc which you got free with a new box of the game.
Thank you bioware for making a great rpg.
Here is the FAQ for anyone that skimmed over the link above.
Doesn't seem TOO bad actually..and there'll probably be cracks soon enough, so I think I'll still grab AC2.

glug: drm haiku
the server is down
now it seems i cannot play
single player games

Oh the bitter irony...

Seems bad to me. For a single player game:
Will I need to be online the whole time when I play the game? Including for single player?
Yes. You will need to have an active Internet connection to play the game, for all game modes.

Thank you, Ubisoft, but no.
What if Ubisoft decides not run these online services in the future? Will my game stop working?
If any service is stopped, we will create a patch for the game so that the core game play will not be affected.

This is when I'll buy their game.

JonhMan: Oh the bitter irony...

Reminds me of when steam was down one time and I couldn't even access offline mode.
I guess that means more focus on older games I don't have.

Coelocanth: Seems bad to me.

Well my main worry was if something happened to my connection temporarily, I wouldn't be able to play. But it says you can resume no problem if you're unable to reconnect. The main reason I would buy it is because I'm expecting a crack. If there were no cracks, I wouldn't go near it.

They should really change the name.

Well ya, cracks will come. But someone shouldn't have to expect a crack to play a game without being logged in. That's one reason why I won't be getting any Ubisoft pc games until this changes. If I really want the game, I'll get the console version. My policy on DRM is simple. If it's not too intrusive, I get the pc version. If it is, then the console version is purchased. And if a company acts like real assholes, then I buy the game used!

Yeah, I agree. But for me it's not enough to make me not buy it...cause I'd like to enjoy the game. I used to not buy games for that reason but it got more exhausting avoiding great games than DRM. :P
Moooo!

Makes You wonder, how many people at Ubi actually understand the basics of gaming.
This reminds me of this nice pic..

acare84: Yes, Ubisoft is dropping PC DRM but you must go online and log in to Ubisoft's servers to play the game, see the main menu, save and load the game. Their games will be like MMO games, you need to log in to play. It is so bad decision because there are huge of gamers who don't want to get online to play their games or don't have internet connection.

Yeah, because this is really better.
