Arcanum, Gabriel Knight, Zeus+Poseidon, Quest for Glory 1-5, and 27 other Activision games 60% off!

As the weekend draws near, it's time to reveal the next exciting promo on GOG.com. Behold the [url=http://www.gog.com/en/promo/activision_weekend_promo_05_10_12/]Activision Greats, a superb collection of 31 memorable titles. Oh, wait... that's wrong. What I meant was: 31 game boxes. Some of them contain more than just one game, so the actual number of Activision Greats amounts to impressive 54 titles! And you can get them all 60% off until Tuesday Ocober 9 at 3:59 AM GMT. Let's take a peek into some of the boxes!

Arcanum: of Steamworks and Magic Obscura summons the spirit of Fallout into a unique world where steampunk meets fantasy in a creative mixture of imagination and pure isometric RPG awesomness. In Arcanum, you get the absolute freedom to create any kind of character you want and pursue whatever quest you find the most fitting. If you're looking for a game that will drain dozens of hours of your free time--here's your best pick!

Gabriel Knight, a tormented young writter, came to be a celebrity of the point-and-click adventure genre. The first game he stars in--subtitled "Sins of the Fathers"--features beautiful pixel-art graphics, over 7000 lines of fully-voiced dialogs, and a dark story balancing on the verge of madness and occult. The game launched a successful and recognizable series that earned its place in the adventure games' hall of fame. Be sure to check the other two games that complete the trillogy: Gabriel Knight2: The Beast Within and Gabriel Knight 3: Blood of the Sacred, Blood of the Damned.

Quest for Glory 1-5 is an amazing collection of Sierra's innovative action-RPGs. Each of the five games can be played as a whole but you can also treat the series as one big adventure, as the character and his accumulated wealth can carry on from one game into another. Become a mage, a thief, or a knight and explore the five huge worlds, each based on a different culture and mythology, from Germanic fairy tales, through Arabian and Slavic folklore, right down to Greek myths. Experience the game that set many standards in the "new school" of computer RPG.

Those excellent games are but a tip of the iceberg of Activision awesomeness. There are dozens of other fantastic titles you can grab 60% off, so head out to Activision Greats promo page and go nuts!

LEArtistic: I'd like to test one of Sierra's "QUEST"-Games.So any suggestions?Which one's the best?
Most of you seem to favor Quest for Glory.

grviper: Indeed, QfG is awesome. It's far less prone to putting you into a dead end without any warning, which is something old KQ and SQ games do all the time.
Thank you, too! After checking all the games detailed descriptions QfG would have been my first choice, because I like the "transfer-your-char-from-game-to-game"-idea (Hope this feature works well).

Telika: But Hero Quest (for Glory) is not trulyexctly a "quest game", it oesn't share the mechanics of the the other, more similar to each others, adventure games. It leans towards RPG. It may be better because of that, but it's not representative of the genre.

For pure "quest", I'd suggest the space quest series, without hesitation. Police quest is too technical, King's quest is a bit too simple or (dare I say) bland. Leisure suit larry is fun (especially the 2nd one). Iceman was pretty cool. Space Quest (1,2,3) remain my favorite sierra parser classic adventure games (for their puzzle, humour, references, universe), along with The Colonel's Bequest - which is also a bit different from the quest series, although closer to them than Glory, but has an immensely great dark disturbing atmosphere.
Thanks for all the infos! So I'll put SQ on my list as well ;D
I counted at least 20 games in this promo that are inta-buys for many people. I already have most of what I wanted from this one, but this is sure to be one of the best sales lately.

ChaunceyK: I was a teenager when all their games came out, so here's my opinion of each series...

King's - great fun if you enjoy medieval themes mixed with fairy tales
Police - a bit of a learning curve due to the nature of police work, but satisfying when you bust someone
Space - lots of humor & sci-fi gags

...so it really depends on what theme you like best.
So because of you guys (thanks again for all your posts) my list already contains QfG,KQ & SQ,but I can't bring myself to buy PQ (some of the screenshots really seem to scream "NO!Don't do it!").
avatar
tfishell: Well that's not fair, and I guess Activision was initially worried about the DRM-free-ness. Shame.
avatar
grviper: Not quite. It's the Russian discount that makes them $10 there.
Ah, I see! In Soveeeit Ru-

PQ just might not be for you. You could always look up some Lets Play videos on YouTube to see what its like....I do that alot when I'm thinking about buying a new game.
Upon taking another good look at the promo, I'm not buying a single thing this week.

I already beat Phantasmagoria 2, I own a complete in box copy of Phantasmagoria 1, I still own my Gabriel Knight 1+2 and 3 sets (without boxes, damn you mom), already own Vampire and Arcanum, have the Space Quest, King's Quest and Police Quest stuff on compilations...

Meh. :(
Had made an earlier post but unfortunately didn't get a response that time but does anyone care to recommend the Zork titles? They're the last that I'm interested in picking up before the promo ends but I'm still on the fence, even after having watched gameplay videos of some of them and obviously having read several reviews.

Grand Inquisitor is fun. It's mental and has some devious spell-related puzzles.

I like Nemesis, myself. It's not your typical Zork game, since the atmosphere is rather dark, bizarre and twisted, whch is supported by Mark Morgan's brillant music. Story and performances are pretty good, as well. :)

grviper: Is there a point in picking up Zeus, if I want to get Pharaoh?
Are PQ 1-4 as full of weird puzzles as KQ and SQ, or will common sense usually carry one through?
Any severe issues in Vampire? Does it live up to "from medieval to modern" premise?
Vampire:TMR is IMO a Musthave.Sure,it has some flaws (controlling your party in combat-situations might be a little difficult),but apart from that you'll get one of the most atmospheric action-RPGs ever:
- unique dark setting & story
- great characters & voice-acting
- fitting soundtrack
- vampire-feeling (suck NPC-blood)
- travel from medieval Praque & Vienna (sword & shield) to modern London & New York (guns, flamethrowers)
I'm thinking between Betrayal at Krondor vs Return to Krondor. Got all those games (3) boxed... but I don't know if they will work on Windows 7. I'm leaning towards Return to Krondor... It's been years since I played them all

Betrayal at Krondor is a DOS Game - it works wherever DOSBox does (i.e. everywhere)
It's companiong, Betrayal in Antara, is a Windows game though.... Don't know if they managed to get it to work in Win 7, or using DOSBox for Win 3.1 emulator or what.

Betrayal at Krondor: as someone said, it is a DOS game, so if you are fine getting it to work in DOSBox yourself, there might be little reason to get the GOG version. However, if you had the floppy disk version of BaK (like I did; actually I had the freeware version released by Sierra when they were marketing Betrayal In Antara, and it is based on the floppy version), the GOG version is based on the CD version IIRC. I don't quite recall for now what are the exact differences between the disc and CD versions. Maybe it is just the music, which comes from CD on the CD version (but probably sounds/is like Roland Sound Canvas MIDI music anyway).

And, you get Betrayal In Antara too, in case it matters to you.

Return to Krondor: At least I had problems getting the FMV parts working in Win7 (and maybe even XP?) with the original retail CD version. They work fine with the GOG version as far as I can tell, so that was enough reason for me to get the GOG version in spite of already having the retail version. Maybe there is a way to get the FMV to work with the original retail version too, I don't know.

Betrayal in Antara (GOG version) seems to work ok at least for me in Win7/64bit. I don't have the retail version, no idea if it does too.
