Arcanum, Gabriel Knight, Zeus+Poseidon, Quest for Glory 1-5, and 27 other Activision games 60% off!

As the weekend draws near, it's time to reveal the next exciting promo on GOG.com. Behold the [url=http://www.gog.com/en/promo/activision_weekend_promo_05_10_12/]Activision Greats, a superb collection of 31 memorable titles. Oh, wait... that's wrong. What I meant was: 31 game boxes. Some of them contain more than just one game, so the actual number of Activision Greats amounts to impressive 54 titles! And you can get them all 60% off until Tuesday Ocober 9 at 3:59 AM GMT. Let's take a peek into some of the boxes!

Arcanum: of Steamworks and Magic Obscura summons the spirit of Fallout into a unique world where steampunk meets fantasy in a creative mixture of imagination and pure isometric RPG awesomness. In Arcanum, you get the absolute freedom to create any kind of character you want and pursue whatever quest you find the most fitting. If you're looking for a game that will drain dozens of hours of your free time--here's your best pick!

Gabriel Knight, a tormented young writter, came to be a celebrity of the point-and-click adventure genre. The first game he stars in--subtitled "Sins of the Fathers"--features beautiful pixel-art graphics, over 7000 lines of fully-voiced dialogs, and a dark story balancing on the verge of madness and occult. The game launched a successful and recognizable series that earned its place in the adventure games' hall of fame. Be sure to check the other two games that complete the trillogy: Gabriel Knight2: The Beast Within and Gabriel Knight 3: Blood of the Sacred, Blood of the Damned.

Quest for Glory 1-5 is an amazing collection of Sierra's innovative action-RPGs. Each of the five games can be played as a whole but you can also treat the series as one big adventure, as the character and his accumulated wealth can carry on from one game into another. Become a mage, a thief, or a knight and explore the five huge worlds, each based on a different culture and mythology, from Germanic fairy tales, through Arabian and Slavic folklore, right down to Greek myths. Experience the game that set many standards in the "new school" of computer RPG.

Those excellent games are but a tip of the iceberg of Activision awesomeness. There are dozens of other fantastic titles you can grab 60% off, so head out to Activision Greats promo page and go nuts!

ShadowWulfe: Terra-Arcanum is still around?

Last time I checked X amount of years ago they were undergoing some sort of site maintenance. The whole thing always looked like it was about come apart anyway.

What is this? It says the link will only work once, so I didn't do anything.

morecowbell24: Let this mean a new wave of Activision games is on the way, and by new wave of Activision games I mean NOLF,
Please God yes. For the love of all unicycle-riding midget mimes, please make this happen.

mistermumbles: Regarding Quest for Glory:
I know I may not be playing it for a while, but when I do, which versions of the first do you consider to be better? EGA or VGA? I've got no problem with typing and graphics certainly aren't everything, but I'm curious as to which of these provide a greater experience overall.
EGA version; I tried the VGA version and hated it. EGA has much more challenging combat and you have to use the command typing system to kind of figure things out and solve puzzles which I found more interesting.

(My comma key isn't working at the moment so apologies for using a substitute.)
Nice, i might pick a few titles up over the weekend.

kalirion: Dammit GOG, my backlog is already humongous (probably over 1000 games by now) due to the various indie bundles I keep buying, and now you do this??? ...
avatar
Trilarion: Seriously you're not a gamer but a collector. I can say this because my backlog is only about one hundred and even I consider myself not a gamer anymore. :)
Mine is somewhere around 400 now. And yet I seem to go back and play the games I've beaten time and time again, i.e. Pokémon, Heroes of Might and Magic. Too many games, not enough time.

Bought Quest for Glory and Torin's Passage. I'll buy the other adventure games at another time.

Loseless version of the soundtrack. Other versions are here: http://terra-arcanum.com/downloads/ > Arcanum > Soundtrack (To be honest, I'm not sure if the links are still active; I'm on a friend's computer, so didn't really want to attempt a download right now.)

I'm currently downloading the soundtrack using that link right now. I think the 'will only work once' warning means the page has to be reloaded if the download link screws up somehow. And by the way, it's SLOW. Like a D/L rate of 200 kb/s for a ~265 MB file. Finished as I typed this.

Yeah, just ignore that warning. I'm able to download the file again from that link.

Is the Krondor series any good?

And, since the remakes of the first 3 King's Quest games are available for free, is it worth it to buy the original versions here?

Great promo. Thanks
Oh man, now I realised that except for Quest for Glory series, none of the other "Quest" series includes BOTH the original and the official remake versions, which is a bummer to me.
This is wierd, but I only own one title in this promo, and don't really feel like getting any others.

Speaking of Activision, why the heck don't we have Battlezone and Heavy Gear 2 yet?!??

MFbM: Is the Krondor series any good?
I think Betrayal at Krondor is one of the best story-heavy RPG I've ever played, but of course, that's a personal opinion.
Anyway, it has a very good, very detailed world as its setting (it is placed in Raymond E. Feist's Midkemia, if that says you anything), amazing atmosphere (the story is written on scrolls!) and a number of game mechanics which set it apart from many other games of the genre (such as, for example, the way skills are handled or the large degree of freedom while still having a strong central plot). However, it requires some learning as the game doesn't hold your hand - after the first pages of the story, the party stands on a clearing and you are on your own, so you'll have to do some reading.

Return to Krondor is another matter; it might be a good game (and I heard it is), but the camera and controls make it a pain to play. This means I never got very far in it, so I can't offer any opinion on the game itself.

Dju: Didn't some Larry enthusiast acquire the rights to the franchise and just did a kickstarter to remake them? Like this one: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/leisuresuitlarry/make-leisure-suit-larry-come-again?
avatar
DCT: He did not acquire the rights, he licensed the IP from Codemasters
Ah ok, thanks for the clarification!

StygianTraveler: So... I kinda have to wonder, do the original creators get any money out of the sales of these games, or does Activision pocket it all?
Yeah, I think the company bigwigs get it all.

It is quite normal that the original developers don't get any more money for something they worked for years or decades ago. For example, my employer is still selling some software with which I helped a long time ago in the past, but I'm not directly getting any kind of cut from those sales.

Neither are any of dozens or hundreds of my colleagues, many of which have moved on to other companies, that were also helping to create/test the software. My employer selfishly thinks I'm supposed to work on more new stuff in order to get any more wage.

What's worse, if I make any kind of new invention even loosely related to my work, it automatically belongs to my employer, not me. Not fair! :(

/sarcasm

Anyways, remember that paying for the publishers for their older games makes them more willing to release more of their old back-catalog in GOG. So it isn't like paying for the older games is totally useless because the original coders who worked with King's Quest 1 in 1984 are possibly not around anymore to get extra money for the work they did for their employer back then. They got already paid back in 1983-84 or so for that work.
