Arcanum, Gabriel Knight, Zeus+Poseidon, Quest for Glory 1-5, and 27 other Activision games 60% off!

As the weekend draws near, it's time to reveal the next exciting promo on GOG.com. Behold the [url=http://www.gog.com/en/promo/activision_weekend_promo_05_10_12/]Activision Greats, a superb collection of 31 memorable titles. Oh, wait... that's wrong. What I meant was: 31 game boxes. Some of them contain more than just one game, so the actual number of Activision Greats amounts to impressive 54 titles! And you can get them all 60% off until Tuesday Ocober 9 at 3:59 AM GMT. Let's take a peek into some of the boxes!

Arcanum: of Steamworks and Magic Obscura summons the spirit of Fallout into a unique world where steampunk meets fantasy in a creative mixture of imagination and pure isometric RPG awesomness. In Arcanum, you get the absolute freedom to create any kind of character you want and pursue whatever quest you find the most fitting. If you're looking for a game that will drain dozens of hours of your free time--here's your best pick!

Gabriel Knight, a tormented young writter, came to be a celebrity of the point-and-click adventure genre. The first game he stars in--subtitled "Sins of the Fathers"--features beautiful pixel-art graphics, over 7000 lines of fully-voiced dialogs, and a dark story balancing on the verge of madness and occult. The game launched a successful and recognizable series that earned its place in the adventure games' hall of fame. Be sure to check the other two games that complete the trillogy: Gabriel Knight2: The Beast Within and Gabriel Knight 3: Blood of the Sacred, Blood of the Damned.

Quest for Glory 1-5 is an amazing collection of Sierra's innovative action-RPGs. Each of the five games can be played as a whole but you can also treat the series as one big adventure, as the character and his accumulated wealth can carry on from one game into another. Become a mage, a thief, or a knight and explore the five huge worlds, each based on a different culture and mythology, from Germanic fairy tales, through Arabian and Slavic folklore, right down to Greek myths. Experience the game that set many standards in the "new school" of computer RPG.

Those excellent games are but a tip of the iceberg of Activision awesomeness. There are dozens of other fantastic titles you can grab 60% off, so head out to Activision Greats promo page and go nuts!
Mighty nice of you.

I'd like Vampire The Masquerade Redemption, and the second can go to someone else.

DCT: I think there is a possibility that there is some issue with those, I know Codemasters owns the IP as I recall Al Lowe somewhere saying that Codemasters still owned the IP when asked about who owned what when it came to Larry, but it's possible that Activision owns the actual games similar to how Brian Fargo owns the Wasteland IP but EA owns the rights to the first game itself.
Completely forgot Codemasters has the IP now, I think in the recent Larry remake kickstarter in was mentioned that the rights to do the remake of the first game were negociated with Codemasters, so that might be a problem.
Still it's weird to see those great Sierra collections with Larry missing.
I recommend Vampire the Masquerade: Redemption. http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/vampire_the_masquerade_redemption

I don't want to say too much about it so someone can experience it all for themselves. Suffice to say I highly recommend it.
Regarding Quest for Glory:
I know I may not be playing it for a while, but when I do, which versions of the first do you consider to be better? EGA or VGA? I've got no problem with typing and graphics certainly aren't everything, but I'm curious as to which of these provide a greater experience overall.
Opinions on SWAT 3 please? Last one I'm on fence about.

There are multiple classes, and so multiple very distinct ways to play each QFG. So why not do the first run using the original versions, and then switch to VGA and compare yourself?

Dju: Didn't some Larry enthusiast acquire the rights to the franchise and just did a kickstarter to remake them? Like this one: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/leisuresuitlarry/make-leisure-suit-larry-come-again?

DCT: Well depending on what patches were used on your version it's possible, if the version you played had the same patches as the GOG versions of the game then it shouldn't be a problem.
avatar
Dju: Thanks for the answer! Maybe my reasoning is flawed, but I guess if I had the same patches back then than GOG has now, even if I can re-use my savegames I'd still be stuck, no?

Anyway worth a try :-)
He did not acquire the rights, he licensed the IP from Codemasters

We also know quite well how good Codemasters is at handling their IPs. =/

True, true hopefully Al can liberate Larry from Codemasters with any luck we could convince him to resell the classics here.

ShadowWulfe: To be fair, the Arcanum soundtrack should just be in the sound files in the game installation. I used to use music from it in the background of presentations.
I've heard it's quite good. Thing is, if it's already in the game files (like various other older games) then it's absurd to not include it in the "goodies" area simply because it's so enticing to (a decent chunk of GOG's) customers, and I'm sure GOG knows this. (PLUS it's already free in this case, unlike the Gothic 3, Psychonauts, Hitman, etc. soundtracks.) But that oh so silly "legal and licensing issues" problem is presumably keeping it from being displayed. Maybe Ben Houge wants to direct traffic to the Terra-Arcanum site for some strange reason? :-/ I sent him one or two emails about this, but nothing...
So... I kinda have to wonder, do the original creators get any money out of the sales of these games, or does Activision pocket it all?

Just to be clear, the "classic" LSL games are not being digitally sold anywhere online right now? (Or maybe even the latest [what most fans consider shite, right?] ones, Magna and Box Office?) Correct me if I'm wrong. Has anyone contacted Al about this? (I haven't read backwards in this topic, so sorry if I missed something.)

Terra-Arcanum is still around?

Last time I checked X amount of years ago they were undergoing some sort of site maintenance. The whole thing always looked like it was about come apart anyway.

StygianTraveler: ...does Activision pocket it all?
Yup. Any of the big publishers on GOG don't pass any money on, so don't feel bad if you do wait for that special sale. That's the case with most of these oldies.
