I know I'm not in charge by any stretch, but rather than rushing into the next game, I guess I'd suggest some debriefing and meta- discussion.

As a few criteria, I guess I'd throw out:

1) I think truly new players should either be pushed harder to observe first, or else get some sort of neutral 'mentor' they are allowed to PM basic questions to about rules/culture/general play. Not "who should I place my vote on" but "Is RP a good idea?" "Why is no one else concerned that Krypsyn gives short, non-committal yet funny answers?" "What the hell is RVS and should I take it seriously?"

2) All games should really have an assistant mod. Even experienced mods may have RL crop up, or may have issues emerge. Two sets of hands for the former, and two brains for the latter

3) Games that are truly designed for 13 should perhaps not be expanded to 16 at the last minute just because there's a temporary surge of interest. If they are going to be expanded, extra time prior to start should be allocated for mod/ass.mod to triple-check balance and PM junk.

4) RL distractions are one thing, but anyone who thinks they might be in FTSIQ mode, might best sit out. ;)

Edit - 5) And while games don't have to be purely vanilla, the cleverest ideas seem to be undercut if a key role goes to someone who ends up either not being engaged at all or bails. Maybe we need to collectively at least alternate complex/simpler games instead of having every game be complex.

And on that note, whoever is hosting or prepping next, I'd really like to assistant mod. I'm on the hosting list a little farther down, so I really want to assist before running.

Extra mods is nice if it's possible to do. When flub had his game Krypsyn helped out a lot in game, and Vitek was there if needed as well so it ran pretty smooth and was very entertaining.

I see no issues with new players jumping right in either if they want too, sometimes the best way to know is to just go for it. First game I played was the werewolf game and I had not watched one before hand and had no clue as to what was going on. I even had the game completely figured out and handed it to the scum LOL

I'm not saying it can't work - I thought my phrasing was intended to convey just trying harder to discourage it, not to forbid it. And to provide a resource for those who really do want to jump in so that the game works better and is more enjoyable/less frustrating for them so that they stick around and want to come back, and also so that the game runs smoother for other players as well.

I am not sure how much I helped (except maybe to expedite the Trivia portion a little). Flubbucket's organization of that game was incredible. He had everything all sorted and filed on a Google Drive; it was almost Mafia-by-numbers.

However, having said that, Vitek made an open offer a while back to co-moderate with anyone who wishes. The same goes for me.

As for the rest of bler144's suggestions, I think he is a stupidhead, and he smells funny ... err ... I mean that they all seem good to me. :)

They should perhaps by guidelines more than rules, however. First time moderators should be encouraged to seek advice from an experienced moderator and warned against going solo initially. New players, similarly, should be encouraged to at least read a past game to get a decent understanding of how it works here (The Werewolf game might be a good example here, as it was fairly fast-paced relative to other games ... also because I won that one).

addendum: I'll note that I had Vitek give my set-up a look before I moderated my first game on here, and it was a big help. I was a pretty experienced Mafia player, but moderating requires a slightly different skill-set. There were a few trouble spots that he brought up that were easily dealt with before the game start.

First off: I don't mean to ignore your suggestion to slow down, Bler. I'm just looking at my Thanksgiving and Christmas related schedules and considering the possible game timings. That said, here's a question for everyone: how soon does everyone want to get the next one up and running? I don't know about any holidays you non-USAians may have coming up, but here Thanksgiving can be hectic for a few days late November and Christmas can get busy mid/late December. Seems long, but do we want to just coast out the year and kick it back up in January?

I want at least one other person to review my setup, preferably someone with mod experience. Adalia is already recruited. However, I'm a little concerned about everyone winding up in the mod thread, leaving no one to play the actual game.

Push it to mid-January when things pick up again and life is on its track again. A lot of people will have plans until anything from 3 to 10 January most likely.

Next semester is a straight up pain in the butt, so I'm going to sit the next game or couple of games out, so if no one else volunteers I offer my assistance in reviewing the setup.

I can echo the value of Mentors for First Time players. I have played on multiple sites which offered this; some even insisted.

Even as the one who came with this originaly I don't think it should be requirement. Every game should have reviewer (unless it's really run-of-the-mill game take from mafiascum.net) and if someone mods for the first time then I would very strongly advise to get someone to help them run it, but I fin i tto be too much to have it as overall necessity. In the past whne mod wasn't able to continue anymore there always was someone willing to take it over even when there was no co-mod.

Also, as it may not seem like it but 16-players game get much more complex for mod and even for players than 12-players one (it is much ahrder to get reads on 15 people than on 11) and makes it harder to achieve lynch majority. For mod it is harder to balance things and keep everything in order and ths it is easier to make a mistake (unless they are flub).
