It seems that you're using an outdated browser. Some things may not work as they should (or don't work at all).
We suggest you upgrade newer and better browser like: Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer or Opera

Luckily I just backed up all mine to a NAS last weekend, right before GOG decided to roll out new installers with hidden changes.

WinterSnowfall: They may not fold, but I'm not excluding any potential installer-based foul play in the future. You never know.
Already happening. The updated installers from the past few days are adding in obfuscated files and creating different directories (hopefully all temp). It was discovered by adamhm when it interfered with his Linux WINE wrappers. It's probably linked to Galaxy, perhaps GOG wanting only to do one package for installers so they now may have Galaxy (nullified but in the background) packaged in with the classic installers. It doesn't put Galaxy on, but the new installers are definitely slowing down the install and shifting things around. adamhm and some others in the Linux community are trying to track down what and where and have questions out to a couple of blues, but no answers as of yet.

You can follow what's happening starting here: adamhms Linux Wine Wrappers ... post 127

Also indications here: Question Regarding the Updated Installers

Starmaker: That website we've all agreed to not link here (and I don't mean I upload things there -- they just maintain backups for me. 30 games updated yesterday and 65 today, ain't nobody got time for that).

There are only two things one needs to have backed up:
- your personal data (emails, saves, that novel you've been working on for 10 years)
- porn.
Everything else the interwebs can take care of.
Save games, mods, games that no longer exist, files you cannot get anymore. Whilst internet doesn't lose anything it's sometimes hard to find things, or websites go offline. Where would you get (for example) ultima 7 which you legally purchased from here if the store closed down?
I don't and should I?

I am considering picking up a HD for this purpose.

A serious question is it worth downloading all my GOG games or leave in the 'cloud'.

Answer 1 simple question:
Do you value your purchased games?

If not, leave them on the web, if the store closes who cares. Buy from steam, Ubisoft and their ilk, if they stop you playing them, who cares.

If however you do care about them and do not want to have a third party control your digital assets then ensure that you are not reliant on any third party reliance.

Simple. Drm is a method of controlling your management of your product, abstai I guess from managing your own digital product ends up with the same effect.

That should read: abstaining from managing your own digital products...

I should have done the same :(

I was postponing that because I'm still on mobile internet (almost unlimited, but quite slow) and I was waiting for a bit better internet provider (I've got fiver-optic cables already, but still awaiting for service provider to launch the service).

And I've never expected that GOG would act like turkeys voting for Christmas. Now I can see that a few games are no longer compatible with adamhm's wrappers and I almost regret I've bought the games here :(

By the way - how much storage do you need for that? Is there any simple method to estimate the size of GOG library? And - have you used any script to make that backup?
External Hard Disk Drive ^_^
Thanks all, backup to HD is the way forward.

gogrepo is the answer to both of your questions.

Well, maybe it is not a simple method to estimate your library size, but quite an accurate one. The biggest hurdle is to set it up the first time (install python on your PC (unless you use Linux in which case you have python pre-installed most probably) etc.

If I were you, I‘d open one ticket for each of your games where the installer changed and ask them to,supply you the old installer files.

According to that other discussion, not all updated installers seem to have received the same treatment (making the adam wrapper incompatible), so it may be it is an error with some of the updated games.

No script, I did it in sections while looking over the forum or working on other things. I'm not much help on how to estimate size since I knew the size of the game library on my old backup from the first of the year and added on to that for the new and future games.

If you have not updated the game installers that use adamhm's wrappers over the past few days, then don't. You can use the pre-update installer already on your system. You could also dl and backup now any installer in your library that does not show as being updated - just in case they change it in future. Meanwhile we'll hope adamhm and the others can find a solution.

Good to know, thank you! Especially as we do use Linux. :)

Come to think of it, this might not be a bad idea. While I would not suggest overwhelming them with every changed installer - for those reported not to work it would indicate to support that there are problems with the updated installers for customers using Linux, or for customers who may not want the longer download and install time (with no gameplay or language additions) and more storage room needed from the larger installer files. At the least it might cause GOG to archive (store) the previous classic installers instead of just delete them all.

EDIT: It now appears that certain of the new installers do not just affect those who want to use Linux wine wrappers or ./play.it, but will also prevent anyone who may need to extract the files for valid reasons.

Me too! Heh, remember the GOG "going out of business" stunt?

Edit: oh, 2 years before your time.

I've heard about it...over and over and over and over and over and.... :P
I have 2 external 4Tb drives. If the house burns, then that's it. LOL
