Super Sonic Speedsters!

Freedom Planet, a very loopy and twisty arcade platformer where speed is king, just like the good old 16-bit times, is available 50% off for a week, DRM-free on GOG.com.

Freedom Planet is a combat-based platform adventure that pits a spunky dragon girl and her friends against an alien attack force. It’s fast and frantic – you’ll fly through the air at high speed like a comet, bust through foes with a flurry of punches or summon motorcycles that let you ride up walls and ceilings. With colorful retro artwork, an adorable cast, and tight but varied gameplay, it’s no wonder Freedom Planet is critically acclaimed as the Sonic successor we’ve all been waiting for.

Save the world like you usually do, but this time be real quick and fancy about it, in Freedom Planet, on GOG.com. The -50% special release discount will last until Tuesday, December 9, at 10:59AM GMT.

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT:

Want to see Jesse Cox taking on the many super-sonic challenges of Freedom Planet, over at ? We've recorded the whole thing for you on our vintage VCR! Here's [url=http://www.twitch.tv/gogcom/b/596407763]part one, and here's part two of the stream archive!

Awesome. Thank you for bringing this here.
I don't get it, is this an old console game, or one made to look like one?
Oh right the Sonic-y thing, it looks great.
I never really liked Sonic all that much though (back when he was still mostly associated with good games), I wonder how much the gameplay is like the early Sonic games.
I have too many platformers in my back log right now.... maybe sometime down the road....
For those on the fence, try before you buy:

"Freedom Planet is an emotional, comedic and fun fast-paced platformer that will keep you on your toes and wary of incoming dangers. It is a game that uses the basics of classics and applies modern attractive features, giving it a fresh feel."
5/5 – Gamerscape Review

"Freedom Planet is like a missing jewel from the Sega Saturn catalog, an amazing action game that can be described a (good) Sonic 2D game developed by Treasure. Don't miss it-- along with Shovel Knight, it's the retro-indie game of the year."
8.5/10 – Meristation

"Freedom Planet is well-written love letter to the sixteen-bit era, reminding players of the power of the action-platformer. Expect to be serenaded by the splendid soundtrack."
81/100 – Tech-Gaming

Yuck, that over the top anime style is real turn-off. I guess I'll at least give the demo a try, then I can judge properly.

thanks for the info. I was going to ask how are the controls because most indie platformers have terrible controls and from the trailer it looked like it was a bit too zoomed in but now i can check for myself.
"I've heard Freedom Planet described as a Sonic clone. I'd call it a worthy Sonic successor, it's that good." - TotalBiscuit

This looks very good. I'm going to try out that demo as soon as I get a chance (thanks Barry).

Welcome to GOG, Galaxy Trail!
Just came in to say that this game is really great and totally worth it.

It's certainly directed towards Sonic fans, but it's not just a Sonic Fangame, in fact I'd claim that it's actually better than most recent Sonic games. But if you don't like the 2D Sonic games you will most likely not like this one either.

The OST is also pretty good!

To answer some questions:
1. It's a pretty new game, GoG was just a bit late in adding it (it was released some months ago).
2. If you don't like the "over the top anime story", you can play the game in classic mode without any story.

Someone once said that Freedom Planet is for people grown up with a Genesis (Mega Drive) as is Shovel Knight for people grown up with a (S)NES.
I think that fits quite well. :-)
I'm glad GoG finally added it, always thoughts it was unfair they added Shovel Knight and not Freedom Planet. =3

Definitely looks like Sonic's long lost cousins....

Sadly this is one of those where the soundtrack doesnt come with it..geeez....

FWIW Shovel Knight was kickstarted. Half a foot in the door from the start...

OK, I'm done with the demo. The developers can report back when they have learned how to program on a PC. Also, WTF kind of demo is this where you can only play time trial!?
Nice release, have the game in Steam (was one of the backers, someone already tried to ask the devs about a GOG key?)
