A brilliant combination of sci-fi movie and pulse-pounding space fighter sim, Wing Commander IV is a pinnacle of gaming excellence

Even though in the game the price of freedom is eternal vigilance, the price of Wing Commander IV: The Price of Freedom is only $5.99 on GOG.com.

Colonel Christopher Blair, former savior of the Confederation, has hung up his spurs and retired as a farmer on a desert world. While Blair has been enjoying the start of his well-earned retirement, a new menace has surfaced. Tensions between the outer colonies and inner Confed worlds are higher than ever. As the newly-reactivated Colonel Blair, you have to decide how to save the Confederation--or if it should be saved at all.

At the time of its release, it was the largest and most expensive video game made yet with an over-the-roof budget of $12 million. The cast was filled with SF superstars like Mark Hamill as Christopher Blair, John Rhys-Davies as James "Paladin" Taggart, Thomas F. Wilson as Todd "Maniac" Marshall, and Malcolm McDowell as Admiral Geoffrey Tolwyn. Once again, this ragged band of heroes has to save the galaxy. The Wing Commander series captured perfectly the feeling of being both a game and a movie, and Wing Commander IV: The Price of Freedom is arguably the most cinematic and epic game of the whole series.

The space combat is everything you expect from a WC game. It’s fast, it’s action-packed, and it’s varied, while missions range from tailing enemy ships or sneaking on an enemy base to detaining convoys and simple “kill the bad guy” battles. The music matches the game’s production value and supports the experience well. Overall, Wing Commander IV is a great addition to an excellent franchise, and will deliver a captivating experience for long-time fans and newcomers alike.

Pick up this masterpiece for just $5.99 right now on GOG.com and enjoy a true classic of PC gaming.

MaridAudran: This is why I'm on GOG. When Privateer 2 is released, it'll be another insta-buy, even at $10 (which is what this DVD WCIV release is worth too, and I would have paid).
Shhhh... me too, but let's keep it a secret! :-p

didn't play this one yet but definitely added to the wishlist

I must admit that I am very plesantly impressed at the size of the game 6 and a half gigabytes is amazing for a 1995 release, correct me if I'm wrong but...didn't this game come on many multiple CD/DVD's?

In any case: It's awesome that this release takes out all of the hassle of installing, great job GOG

It originally came on 6 CDs. Don't know about the DVD re-releases, though. Must have been 2 DVDs for the first one, I'd assume. The second DVD release, according to Wikipedia, did not include the improved videos, so 1 DVD would have been enough.

6 CD's? damn, kinna reminds me of the first Dragon's lair port on the PC, that had 13 Floppy disks

In any case, it's great that the GOG team brought us the best version of the game here, I hope it will be like this for every release

MaridAudran: Well done GOG. Insta-buy (couldn't whip out my debit card fast enough). I was planning on always buying WCIV again when it hit GOG's digital shelves, but I wasn't expecting the DVD release! (like many, I've bought/owned the six-CD DOS version).

After the expansionless, non-KS saga WC 1/2/3, and the no-frills, sans-Alien Crossfire version of Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri, etc (common to EA releases here), I was expecting a more bare-bones WCIV, but you surprised me. Clearly the most thought/preparation went into this EA title. All the extras are just gravy (can someone tell me how many of 'em overlap with the WC III extras?).

This is why I'm on GOG. When Privateer 2 is released, it'll be another insta-buy, even at $10 (which is what this DVD WCIV release is worth too, and I would have paid).

Merchito: I'm completely new to this type of games.

Should I start by playing Wing Commander III (or previous) before this one ?

MaridAudran: In my opinion, yes. The missions are more straight-forward, and the campaign seems longer (a little less branching, not *quite* as many FMV sequences and triggered in-flight events), and the mechanics, engine, and gameplay is largely the same. On a technical level, WCIV uses the same engine and FMV sequences with some tweaks and upgrades.

But more to the point, all the backstory and characters should improve your experience of the ongoing plot, especially in WCIV, immeasurably. The two are really connected, but in the narrative arc and many of the same cast returning and acting (I would argue WC III and WC IV are more connected than WC IV is to Wing Commander Prophecy, or really Prophecy to any previous WC game really). You could safely start at WCIII, if the first two games are a bit too dated for a newcomer, and not feel lost.
Thanks a lot :) I'll start with WCIII then.
heh memories I remember spending late nights playing WC4 back in the days:) One of the best games I've ever played:) Now I'm just waiting for WC5: The Prophecy as it is the only one of the series I've missed out when originally released.
Now it's settled: we all love GOG again :D (we sure are a bipolar bunch).
Amazing release, even for a guy who didn't play any of the games. This seems like a good time to jump in the Wing Commander wagon (I will need to buy the third game first at least :D).

WC IV is in many ways independent from the stories of the earlier trilogy. New enemy, new war.
Okay, an important question for anyone who installed this.

Does this game include actual MP4 / VOB files, or are they transcoded files? I have the DVD version and it's on a dual sided DVD. I backed it up and it was 8 GB. So this being 6 GB is a bit... strange to me.
At last! :D

Maybe the installer was compressed? The game must've been slightly larger than that.
Does anyone know if I can play these games (WC3 and WC4) with a Playstation 2 controller with a USB adapter?

Fever_Discordia: The wish list entry for this one needs to be updated to 'completed', also when will the 'hide completed' tick box work?
Cheers

kodeen: It kinda works now, you just have to check the box BEFORE changing the sort. Doing it the other way around is broken.
Interesting - I'll try that thanks
It makes me happy that an old game from in the top 20 most wanted got added even if I won't be getting it as I've got the media in my cupboard still
