A brilliant combination of sci-fi movie and pulse-pounding space fighter sim, Wing Commander IV is a pinnacle of gaming excellence

Even though in the game the price of freedom is eternal vigilance, the price of Wing Commander IV: The Price of Freedom is only $5.99 on GOG.com.

Colonel Christopher Blair, former savior of the Confederation, has hung up his spurs and retired as a farmer on a desert world. While Blair has been enjoying the start of his well-earned retirement, a new menace has surfaced. Tensions between the outer colonies and inner Confed worlds are higher than ever. As the newly-reactivated Colonel Blair, you have to decide how to save the Confederation--or if it should be saved at all.

At the time of its release, it was the largest and most expensive video game made yet with an over-the-roof budget of $12 million. The cast was filled with SF superstars like Mark Hamill as Christopher Blair, John Rhys-Davies as James "Paladin" Taggart, Thomas F. Wilson as Todd "Maniac" Marshall, and Malcolm McDowell as Admiral Geoffrey Tolwyn. Once again, this ragged band of heroes has to save the galaxy. The Wing Commander series captured perfectly the feeling of being both a game and a movie, and Wing Commander IV: The Price of Freedom is arguably the most cinematic and epic game of the whole series.

The space combat is everything you expect from a WC game. It’s fast, it’s action-packed, and it’s varied, while missions range from tailing enemy ships or sneaking on an enemy base to detaining convoys and simple “kill the bad guy” battles. The music matches the game’s production value and supports the experience well. Overall, Wing Commander IV is a great addition to an excellent franchise, and will deliver a captivating experience for long-time fans and newcomers alike.

Pick up this masterpiece for just $5.99 right now on GOG.com and enjoy a true classic of PC gaming.

A shout-out goes to WC News for all the help they gave the GOG.com team of content-wranglers in getting the extra goodies together that you're enjoying with the release, as well as helping us source a our game master & the DVD videos! They're awesome, and if you're a fan of Wing Commander, you should definitely check them out.

revco: I'm not getting the sound to work...I only hear the options selecting up & down.
Some people have been saying installing CCCP/Combined Community Codec Pack helped
Oh, so cool! I can probably make a little time to take this for a spin. Mac users, anything I need to know installation/configuration-wise?

gameon: I'd like to know that too. Also I dont even know how to change the inverted up/down with keyboard controls.

Foxhack: Install your PS2 controller adapter and then use something like XPadder to configure the controls.
Thanks man! Good to know - flying with a keyboard tends to be a mess.
That's much better GOG. WC IV is a stunner and an indie+old release is something everyone should be happy with.
My two appreciation cents: I love Wing Commander IV, but it is obviously a game that has more strength in its cinematics than in its gameplay, which is not very different from what was experienced in WC2 (there is just a little more variation). The acting, the story, the dialogs, is pure pulp space opera delight (yes, with some political overtones, not very deep though), and the production values behind the movie are nothing short of amazing, at least for a videogame. It's just a game that is a pleasure to play, that becomes familiar in a few minutes, which is not as smooth or as pretty as the Freespace saga, which still has ugly textures, but a delight after all.

Now, the DVD version is, surprisingly, playable and viewable. Someone came up with a wrapper for that specific DVD codec, and the version can be played with no flaw with Windows XP (no idea about Windows7). So... recommended. Very. Pinnacle of FMV games back then, you know. So much movie that they offered Chris Roberts to make a real one, and it was much poorer than what he made here.
WOOT!! WC4 yay! Now if you can only get us those expansions for 1 & 2 itll complete the set and i'll be teh uber happies!

Sadly it's one of those EA hasn't given us permission but EA is claiming that they did type of things, sorta like what EA did when Starbreeze said they couldn't update the Syndicate shooter until EA wrote off on it and EA played the whole were innocent card. Like anyone who has a functioning brain actually buys that their the innocent ones.
I'll grab this at some point . . =)
Excellent release, particularly with the DVD videos. This will be purchased.

It sadly doesn't work in CX11 (from my limited testing) and it doesn't work in WINE 1.5 under Wineskin - puzzling since on the AppDB someone reported that it works very well under an earlier WINE build. I'll change WINE versions and see if that helps.

Oh I know. I trust EA less than I can throw them. Maybe they will eventually when they realize that as it is they dont get any money at all for it until its released in some form or other... one thing about greedy penny pinching corporations is you can always trust them to be greedy

Well that and they are almost always run by idiots who have no ability to grasp basic logic and instead only can understand backwards buissness logic
Dear GOG,

I love you

That is all

Thank you GOG, WC4 is more than welcome here. Will buy it today.

Now, a word of an advice. I hope you are aware, that Wasteland 2 is coming next year. Maybe it is time to contact Brian Fargo and add Wateland to GOG catalogue?

davstern: contact Brian Fargo and add Wasteland to GOG catalogue?
Fargo doesn't have the rights to that game. He has the rights to the name, setting, and story, but not the game itself. EA owns that.

Of course, EA is here already, but getting them to cooperate with inXile... well...
