A brilliant combination of sci-fi movie and pulse-pounding space fighter sim, Wing Commander IV is a pinnacle of gaming excellence

Even though in the game the price of freedom is eternal vigilance, the price of Wing Commander IV: The Price of Freedom is only $5.99 on GOG.com.

Colonel Christopher Blair, former savior of the Confederation, has hung up his spurs and retired as a farmer on a desert world. While Blair has been enjoying the start of his well-earned retirement, a new menace has surfaced. Tensions between the outer colonies and inner Confed worlds are higher than ever. As the newly-reactivated Colonel Blair, you have to decide how to save the Confederation--or if it should be saved at all.

At the time of its release, it was the largest and most expensive video game made yet with an over-the-roof budget of $12 million. The cast was filled with SF superstars like Mark Hamill as Christopher Blair, John Rhys-Davies as James "Paladin" Taggart, Thomas F. Wilson as Todd "Maniac" Marshall, and Malcolm McDowell as Admiral Geoffrey Tolwyn. Once again, this ragged band of heroes has to save the galaxy. The Wing Commander series captured perfectly the feeling of being both a game and a movie, and Wing Commander IV: The Price of Freedom is arguably the most cinematic and epic game of the whole series.

The space combat is everything you expect from a WC game. It’s fast, it’s action-packed, and it’s varied, while missions range from tailing enemy ships or sneaking on an enemy base to detaining convoys and simple “kill the bad guy” battles. The music matches the game’s production value and supports the experience well. Overall, Wing Commander IV is a great addition to an excellent franchise, and will deliver a captivating experience for long-time fans and newcomers alike.

Pick up this masterpiece for just $5.99 right now on GOG.com and enjoy a true classic of PC gaming.

A shout-out goes to WC News for all the help they gave the GOG.com team of content-wranglers in getting the extra goodies together that you're enjoying with the release, as well as helping us source a our game master & the DVD videos! They're awesome, and if you're a fan of Wing Commander, you should definitely check them out.

andrestv: Does anyone know if I can play these games (WC3 and WC4) with a Playstation 2 controller with a USB adapter?
avatar
gameon: I'd like to know that too. Also I dont even know how to change the inverted up/down with keyboard controls.
Install your PS2 controller adapter and then use something like XPadder to configure the controls.
6.4 GB! Holy shit.

I am confused about these games though. On GOG, the Wing Commander games are not listed under Simulations, separate from Freespace and Independence War, and the genres listed on each game page are Shooter and Action. So how likely is it that space sim fans will enjoy Wing Commander?

Very similar to Freespace in the actual gameplay. Just more cinematics in between. Not sure why it isn't under simulator.
WOW!!! Yeahhh!!! Woohoo!! I did NOT see this one coming! Once again, GOG hits us with a complete surprise, and a great one it is! This is the best of the Wing Commander series, both as an interactive movie and as a simulator. The only thing really missing is the cockpit interior, but in WCIII that was more of a distraction than an asset. The movie portion of the game is the best WC movie there is, including the theatrical movie released later.

The acting is top notch; Mark Hamill is convincing as Col. Blair, Tom Wilson is hilarious and annoying at the same time, and he often steals the show as Maniac, Malcolm McDowell's performance is dark and intense, and the late Jason Bernard turns in his final film performance as Captain Eisen portraying him as very serious, but with a streak of mischief. Sadly, he passed away shortly after the game's release, but he definitely lives on through this great classic. Of course the story is excellent and will keep you guessing all the way through the ride. This GOG surprise is full of surprises.

The simulation portion of the game is also excellent. The familiar cockpit interior is gone this time, but the ships handle quite well, and you will fly some really interesting ships in this installment. You will fly everything from fighters to bombers to... well, you'll find out. No spoilers here. In any case, you will not be disappointed if you are a fan of space sims, Wing Commander, or just great games.
I received this game as a birthday present when I was 12 or 13. It didn't run well on my computer (the videos would freeze after a second or two). Sadly, I had to return it.

A couple of years later I picked up WC3, but I don't think I finished that one. Helluva game, though.

MaridAudran: This is why I'm on GOG. When Privateer 2 is released, it'll be another insta-buy, even at $10 (which is what this DVD WCIV release is worth too, and I would have paid).

drhoads: Shhhh... me too, but let's keep it a secret! :-p
So.. it's three of us :) (but I would prefer to buy Privateer 2 for 6$ :P)
So I picked this up and I had trouble getting the sound to work. I solved that problem. Now, however, all the cutscenes are mirror images. So everything is backward or upside down. Anyone else having this problem?
the other thing to trace down is the wing commander 3 movie made from the wc III game. they did a great job making the movie.

Instant purchase...when's WC5/6 coming? Even though I still have WC5 on disc and the WC6 secret missions thing somewhere, I'll buy them too.

baranek: heh memories I remember spending late nights playing WC4 back in the days:) One of the best games I've ever played:) Now I'm just waiting for WC5: The Prophecy as it is the only one of the series I've missed out when originally released.
A word of advice (coming from a major WC fan): just pretend the series ended with Wing Commander 4, and epiloged by Privateer 2.

WC prophesy is honestly more akin to the Wing Commander Movie than the other games, the story adds nothing to the WC universe and all it offers in game play terms is a improved game engine (that Freespace takes out back and beats with a garden hose).

compare for yourself:

WC 4: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9RjB8UzH3pc

I have two quick questions: About how long would you say a playthrough would be? And does it have a better ending than Mass Effect 3?

Lol of course it has a better ending then ME3 even Ultima 1 had a better ending then ME3
I have to say, this is an extremely impressive release and definitely one of the best you can find on GOG. The DVD quality video, awesome extras and the excellent price make this a no-brainer instabuy for me, even though I won't have time to play it anytime soon.

this game comes from the age of game play being measured not in hours, but in days (yes, plural, as in more than one) and I'm talking about full 24 hour clock cycle "days" not just a 6 hour play session being counted as a "Day."

looking through a guide for the game I count 48 missions, I could be off a little on my counting though and that includes all the alternate missions (so you will never see -all- of the missions in one play through). there are a few single objective missions that go fast, but most missions are at least three way points and involve battles at each stop ... so probably a half hour of game time, but that's not counting time wasted when you get shot down mid mission and have to start from scratch.

so it's really easy to spend an hour on a mission ...

then add in ship time, when your wandering around the carrier talking to people (AKA cut scenes) or pouring over the load out menu.

FYI Origin simply did not make short games .... ever. the scale of the common MMO is actually emulating the scale of the single player Ultima titles.
I'm not getting the sound to work...I only hear the options selecting up & down.
