Until recently, I used the Symbol of Torment avatar available on the GOG extras, but eventually I got fed up with other people (unsurprisingly) using the same one. So now I've got a cropped, resized and crudely coloured bit from Hania's Tormented Heart video.

Speaking of which, and in case anyone is interested, I'm hosting a giveaway for people who want NWN2 and are willing to give an indie musician a chance. [/ad]

Serial Experiments LAIN - the best anime ever and one of the best cyberpunk themed pieces ever.

I used to have lots of LAIN related wallpapers on stuff back when i saw it for the first time. Excellent series, but as old cyberpunk 2020 pnp player i do disagree with the 'cyberpunk' classification ;)

"Virtual Reality and AI does not Cyberpunk make" as Yoda used to say back in the good old days(tm).

To not to stray offtopic: the avatar i used before and actually still use in steam is a pic of cake with red circle and line on top -> kinda "Cake denied" thing, which surprise surprise, i made out of boredom after having just finished Portal 1. So yes, thats decently old avatar.

It's Giant Zombie Cat from The Cat Lady. Comes from the time when I tried to convince people that the game would be a good addition to GOG catalog.
Also, it comes from a scene that made me laugh to the point I had tears in my eyes.

Depends on how you define cyberpunk. LAIN asks questions about virtual reality, about modernization and computerization of modern life, how is that going to change us, are our "machines" defining us or not, differences between VR and reality (if there are any), self awareness of AI and many, many more.

I prefer that kind of cyberpunk over LOLWUT CYBER ARMS AND LASERS. (this is how CDP Red "Cyberpunk" seems to be so far)

And to be honest... Global wars on state-corporations is kind of boring, and frankly, these kind of stories are not what classic cyberpunk was all about.

Tea is tea, coffee is coffee. I like em both, yet Lain is not cyberpunk.

Lain would be something like "existential scifi thriller" or whatever, but far faraway from the core of cyberpunk - even if part of soundtrack is named "Cyberia".

There is simply very little of the -punk- in Lain. And cyberpunk without rebellion against some higher authority, dystopian world, physical merging of man and machine is simply NOT cyberpunk. It is scifi of some other genre.

Sorry for the OT, wont be baited more on this promise ;)

You seem to have your own definition.

You also seem to perceive "rebellion" only as an act of violence, which again, is wrong. But I'm going to stop here, because I don't want to get into 20 pages tyrade of what classic cyberpunk really is about.

by the way, in LAIN you have dystopian world and physical merging of man and machine, but maybe you haven't noticed. Or maybe you just see "merging" as lolwut cyber arms and lasers.

but hey, by your definition Blade Runner isn't a cyberpunk story, so what do I know.

PS. every source you could ever found will list LAIN, Akira and GITS as classic examples of cyberpunk japanese animation.

read this for starters: http://theinternetcrashed.com/2010/07/cyberpunk-in-film-serial-experiments-lain/

I liked what Black Mage did there, and plan to follow in his footsteps :)

I actually got permission by email from Brian Clevinger to use the image as my avatar.

I wasnt supposed to reply, but huoh.

Instead of basing my opinion on some random review or opinion on internet, I will save breath and just link this: http://project.cyberpunk.ru/idb/cyber_punk.html

Start with "The Coining" - it tells you who coined the term and what was his intention.

i am feeling strong temptation to now change my avatar to the original 2020's cover pic...
It's a self portrait. Lisa did it for me.
That is my long time companion and friend Azaghail Kain. We have traveled together for years - since meeting and undertaking the dreaded task of solving the Mystery of the Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord from King Trebor. We proved that we were up to the task and Werdna met his doom.

The one I was using not too long ago was a Chespin picture that I found on DeviantART for the Pokemon games coming out later this year (X and Y). The one I'm using right now is Ignis Scientia (Final Fantasy XV) from a couple of scans that were posted on NeoGAF some time ago. FFXV cast, pictures, and Japanese voice actors.
My Avatar is the cartoon version of me I use on my YouTube Channel. This is the Avatar I currently use on YouTube
You know my Avatar is Michael from the upcoming GTA 5, I just really liked that scene in the trailer with his face like this:

I bought Rayman Origins.
It was accompanied by this avatar.
I liked it.
True story.
