I asked a game developer why his game is not coming to GoG and he is afraid that if he puts it on GoG he would lose a lot of revenue. He feels that GoG is a big reason in the pirating arena because of the DRM-Free versions of the game and does not feel like it is worth having his game on any other platform then itch or Steam.

So what I am saying is GoG a big cause of pirating?
And how much of a lose would a developer have if any if he puts it on GoG?

I feel that there is no lose to putting the game on GoG and I feel like if GoG was not around then people would find other ways to pirate, I bet there are already ways to pirate DRM version of games if you work hard enough.

No.
itch.io is DRM-free - just like GOG.
Steam games can be cracked.
Denevo can be cracked.
All 3rd party protection can (and will be) cracked sooner or later.

What game and what dev - sounds like a lazy ass making excuses.
What is the developer doing then? Just selling Steam keys through itch.io? Or did I fall asleep for a decade and miss where itch.io implemented their own DRM as well?

Hardly. Virtually every game released on Steam, uPlay & Origin have been cracked. And when the same game gets released on both GOG & Steam simultaneously, some "scene groups" even make a deliberate choice to not upload the GOG version until after (if at all) the Steam version has been cracked to "prove a point". And even then it's the Steam version that gets torrented 10x more. And many games on itch.io are DRM-Free too so his "stance" there makes zero sense either...

Same ol tired excuse.

DRM was never intended as an anti-piracy measure. The real target was killing the used game market*. They succeeded in doing so on pc with valve's help.

So no, GoG (or any other drm-free shop) does not have an increased chance of piracy compared to say... steam for reasons Bigs mentioned above.

*because that was the real money drain for big publishers.

EDIT: I do not support piracy in any shape or form. Never have, never will. If a game carries draconian DRM i simply do not bother with it. End of.

He should check torrent sites. 99% of the games are uploaded from Steam versions, rarely are there GOG versions. So no, piracy is not a valid reason.

Exactly. If anything GOG is doing more to fight piracy than any other platform by giving customers what they want.
So putting a game on GOG and selling the game for some profits is worse than putting the game on Steam, Origin, uPlay or the dreaded Epic store where it is gonna get cracked anyways? It sure must be GOG’s fault for the existence of pirating/sarcasm. Has anyone thought about maybe making better games that actually have a soul and heart behind it? Cheers

Haven't you heard. All gamers want nowadays are reboots, remasters and MTX infested games-as-a-service titles.
I mean that's what all "Triple-A" pubs push out so it must be true... /s

Exactly. The gaming industry is gonna erradicate piracy in no time, and naturally of course. Sometimes i feel like i got ripped of for playing one of “those” games for free. They sure are going in the right direction in the anti-piracy battle.

Itch.io is not DRM-free.
Probably over 99% of their games are DRM-free, but there are some that aren't.

Huh.. news to me... the more you know. What games (aside from those that offer Steam keys only - no file download from itch.io) have DRM?

I have no idea about a complete list, but here is one example:

http://calaris.itch.io/wolfschanze-1944

System Requirements
- PC computer with mouse and Windows (Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8) operating system.
- DirectX 9 or higher GPU
- Internet connection (for copy protection. and yes torrents will not work so don't regret $0,99 for developers).

(emphasis added)
itch.io doesn't implement their own DRM, but the downloads you get from them come from the developer as-is, which means they can slap on any DRM of their choosing.

A cause of pirating? Of course. So is Bethesda, EA, Microsoft, and just about any other company, because if you offer a game someone is bound to pirate it.

Are they a big cause or a primary? No... No more than any of the BBS's being blamed for being the cause of pirating in the 80's and 90's when you bought games on 5 1/4 floppy disks. A video talking about the war between crackers who cracked software to put out for free, there would be messages between groups calling the other groups out, calling some hacks, some copying another's work and just slapping their name on it, among other things.

Blame the BBS, blame the platform, blame the storefront if you want. They are not the core problem, and never will be.

Oddly i don't hear anyone asking if anyone pirates free software....
