ciemnogrodzianin: Destination: 1996 | the year of Duke and Quake (and Diablo)
Would play Duke and Quake, but I already finished both of those a couple months back(also I am saving Diablo for some other time)....so put me down for the following:

Strife(I have been playing this one on and off over the last few months already, actually)
Crusader: No Regret (never played this one ever, iirc)
Harvester (to replay once again...hopefully Steve won't be such a kidder this time)
The Neverhood (also a replay.....assuming I can find my copy and get it working)

Btw OP: Toonstruck is a very nice game...i'd play it myself as well, but I also finished it not too long ago......I hope you enjoy it. :)

Also a bit of GR trivia for the thread: The Dame was Loaded was one of the first games of it's genre that I played using my own money....got it in a big box in a "thrift store"....fun times.

Wonder if this will get me to give Fantasy General a go. Meant to do so this year at one point... Probably not.

Anyway, just checked games I played and, for one, the Olympic Challenge games are definitely way older. '96 seems to be the US release date of the compilation. The European one was in '92, and Winter Challenge (the one I played) is from '91.

Then, just the base HoMM2 was '96, expansion '97... Compilation '98, but that doesn't really matter, otherwise it'd be an issue for Settlers 2 too, but there all content seems to be from '96 indeed... Then again, if release of the actual compilation doesn't matter, Worms United would be a '95 release (game and expansion, just the compilation itself being '96). But yeah, these can work, if we're being lenient about it.
I will play Eradicator.

Hello ciemnogrodzianin and all the other time travellers!

I am wrapping up the final report about my chosen game from 1995 and am ready to jump into the next stop on our journey!

1996 saw many good games on both sides of the gaming market (PC and consoles), but as already mentioned here in the 1995-thread, for me
the year 1996 was mainly about the foray into 3D gaming with the first "Tomb Raider" and "Fade to Black" (sequel to Flashback) released on the original Playstation (Playstation One, PS1 or PSX).

I might play "Tomb Raider" for the up-teen time, but rather would like to replay "Fade to Black", since I am still in the mood for more science fiction action!

And thanks to ResidentLeever I am reminded of "Wipeout XL" (in Europe known as "Wipeout 2097") whose original Playstation release was in 1996, too. It does fit quite well into the scifi-category and will scratch that itch!

So, my main entry for 1996 will be "Fade to Black", and I will try to squeeze in "Wipeout 2097".

Kind regards,
foxgog

Ok put me down for Toonstruck and if there's time I'll sacrifice myself for the greater good and play AD 2044. I should actually be able to join this time since I won't need a memory card.

1996 was a good year, with lots of very different game if (like me) you just ignored the noise of the RTS bandwagon (or was it 1997 that was the year of the RTS games?).

I thoroughly enjoyed Diablo and HoMM 2 back in the days.
I wanted to like Daggerfall, but "the void" and spaghetti dungeons ruined it for me.
I actually found Civ 2 too hard, but when I replayed it some years ago I found it rather too easy.
I liked Quake back then, but replaying it I didn't like the small, cramped level with only a few enemies at a time.
When retro gaming in recent years I really liked Duke Nukem 3D, Terra Nova: Strike Force Centauri and Jagged Alliance: Deadly Games (except the last mission).
Didn't enjoyed Strife very much ("Ran out of resources. Large, confusing levels. Tedious."). Final Doom was better, but not the best Doom game.
A game that appealed to me was Crusader: No Regret, but I just couldn't adjust to the UI.
One of the very few RPGs of note that year was Wizardry Gaiden IV: Throb of the Demon's Heart. Played it with an emulator, and it's a pretty good Japanese Wizardry game without puke inducing anime.
I found Master of Orion II: Battle at Antares a decline after the brilliant first game and only played it briefly.

Evil's Doom was another RPG that needs an emulator. It was one of the last big Amiga games, but as usual with the Amiga pirates ruined it when a review copy started circulating, the designers quit in disgust, and it took decades before it was finally officially released. One of the better real time blobbers, IMO.

Add me to a new time travel, captain.

It´s only me or 1996 has more in quality and quantity games than 1995? I see a lot of games i would like to try:

• Broken Sword: The Shadow of the Templars
• Command & Conquer: Red Alert
• Diablo + Hellfire
• Duke Nukem 3D
• Harvester
• Leisure Suit Larry: Love for Sail!
• Normality
• Phantasmagoria 2: A Puzzle of Flesh
• Tex Murphy: The Pandora Directive
• Toonstruck

The year of Duke 3D vs Quake, Diablo that revolutioned rpg genre, the refinement of rts, the Tomb Raider boom, a huge number of adventure games...

For this month i´m in with:

3 Skulls of the Toltecs, the original game is from 1996 but i´d play the remastered version. I would like to play some more humouristic, and this is perfect, an old style Lucas Arts adventure game.

Broken Sword: The Shadow of the Templars, to remember Good Old Days.

and if i have time Phantasmagoria: A Puzzle of Flesh, the next stept of Sierra Interactive Movies.

Good trip to everyone!
'96.........

Great choices! :)

I loved Broken Sword, it's such a smart, well-balanced adventure.
And I don't think we can say the same about Phantasmagoria, but both are an important part of the genre's history – and I guess both are classics worth to be known/played.
I may have started playing Death Rally a bit early. :P
Well I've started Toonstruck and it reminds me a lot of 90s cartoons which I guess is kinda the point. I'm enjoying it but one question I have is are there any walking dead scenarios? Generally not a fan of that.
