prakaa: Stop Oblivion hatin'. Might not have been the game EVERYONE wanted, but for me, it's on my top 5...
Unfortunately, it was a huge drop-off from the joys of Morrowind.... combat was better, but everything else (story, creatures, factions, ect.) just weren't as compelling for me.
I wonder how many Oblivion debates there have been on the internet. I am guessing literally hundreds of thousands. Think of all the forums that exist, each of them has probably had 10+ threads that turned into debates on the merits of Oblivion. That has to equal hundreds of thousands in the end. Shit, put it across all languages and we're talking millions maybe.

Anyway... Oblivion is an awesome game for different reasons than Morrowind was an awesome game. I prefer Morrowind, but recognize the strengths and weaknesses of both. La-de-da, now my day is complete.

mystral: For me it's not only not in my top 5, but much closer to my top 5 worst RPG ever (though not quite there, I've played quite a few bad RPGs unfortunately).

Oblivion was full of very bad ideas, and had a very bland world (which is very bad in a game where exploring is the main draw).
Oblivion was a pretty mediocre game. I was really hyped for it because I was a total Morrowind junkie. Playing the game for about 4 hour was one of my biggest disappointments in gaming ever (Together with Arcania). I was always hoping that it would get better, it simply never did. I've tried to play it again on many occasions but no dice.

However what really aggravated me was how the game was heralded as the second coming of jesus or something. That was probably the death of gaming journalism for me, haven't trusted it since. And then like a year later, after having given it multiple 11/10s etc, all these reviewers start saying - actually, it wasn't such a great game after all. Yeah no shit dumb nuts, hype much?

Tulivu: I am sure Beth is aware of the popular criticism Oblivion received and despite its flaws, Oblivion was a pretty big undertaking. They have the tools to make a huge detailed RPG so I am hopeful. I won't pre-order or buy until I have heard some damn good reviews, but I never do that (except maybe Batman Arkham games).
I just watch youtube gameplay videos. They are much more useful since then you see the gameplay etc. and not some hype reviews.

Sorry, by reviews I meant personal testimonies from people I know and GOG. Reviewers can suck me. Seriously, any reviewers not busy right now?
I've got bad news for Skyrim... according to Craig Lafferty, Lead-Producer, Beth's lead platform for Skyrim are consoles :(

Well that was clear from the start. But why should i care since morrowind was also not my cup of tea. I have not played daggerfall yet so maybe these ones are better.

If it is as moddable as Oblivion then it doesn't matter. Crappy UI? Doug's Improved UI Mod. Buggy? Official Unofficial Patch. Not enough titties? Tulivu's Titular Titty Mod.

This is why PC is great. If Beth abandons the mod community (Oblivion's saving grace, IMO) then I def won't buy this w/ out some spectacular polish on release. And titties.

Even the mods could not save the day because the game was so broken in the core.

Meh, I dunno... atleast the CS was confirmed for the PC.
So slash11 you played only few hours and found out that Oblivion is the worst game ever? :)
You haven't even touched the main story, haven't seen half of the places in the game world. I really can't understand how can you say it is crap.
If you came here saying that the game is bad, because of leveling, because there is missing stuff you liked from Morrowind I could understand you, but saying that you hated the game after 10 minutes is silly. :)

Bethesdas games are similliar to Fable games, one big world and plenty of freedom for your imagination. They are not linear story driven games, where stats rule.
I really can't understand why some people bash those games all the times.
It's like me going in to Witcher forum and try to convince everyone that the game is crap because the world is not open, you can't jump and there is almost no exploration.

There are different kind of RPGs, like there are different sort of racing games and shooters.
There are story driven ones and there openended and openworld ones.
If you expect dialogue and choices every step, play Witchers, Dragon ages or BG, if you want room for your imagination and big worlds with plenty of things and secrets to explore play Morrowind, Oblivion, Fables or Gothics.
It's simple, no need for every game to cater to everyones taste.

mutishev: Snip
This is how I feel about it. I love the open RPGs and was able to make my own fun out of Oblivion and Fallout 3 despite the flaws that I obviously admit are there. But yes, that is the basis for most of his arguments.

Where did i wrote i played oblivion for 10 minutes ?
I tell you my experience from oblivion. (PC version)
First i played for 2 hours and then i installed many mods to "repair" the game (60).
All in all i played for around 10 hours.
Conclusion: Almost the whole world + caves are a copy paste job (The explore factor is not there)
The combat was repetitive before i even got out of the first cave.
Also the AI is horribly broken.
The economy is broken.
I could go on and on. Oblivion does not need mods but yet a complete rehaul.

I don't know about Slash11, but I did enter Oblivion with reasonable expectations; I basically wanted a prettier Morrowind with more interesting combat.
I got Oblivion instead.

I'm willing to admit that I prefer story-based RPG to open-world one, but that doesn't mean I don't like the latter. Daggerfall, Morrowind, Gothic 1&2, or Risen are very good games.

Even by those standards though, Oblivion fails (so does Fable btw).
It fails at having a coherent, interesting world, it fails at featuring interesting combat, it fails at providing a challenge, hell it even fails at giving the player a decent levelling system.
Most importantly, though, it fails at being fun.

I still don't understand how Bethesda could have thought how their broken level scaling was a good idea, and how the same dev team could have produced a very good exploration-based RPG one time, and such a broken, boring game the next.
to slash11
Ok I am sorry for the 10 minutes, my mistake.

Have you ever thought that the problem might be in you and not the game. This sort of games might not be for you.
So please play the games you like and stop bashing the games you don't like and calling them broken.
I for my self don't find any of the things you mentioned as broken.

It's funny how you found out for 2 hours that the game is broken and even you were able to find out what mods could fix it. :)

This reminds me of a guy from Stalker forums, who just have bought SoC and asked for advice what mods to use. He didn't even know what the game is but he was already believing that it is broken.
I think you started to play Oblivion with the same attitude. :)
