GameRager: This....people keep saying they want innovation in the gaming industry then when we actually DO get new games that bring back old franchises in a new way or bring new gameplay to the table they complain it isn't as good as it used to be. :\
avatar
Mr.Spatula: That's because when they bring back old franchises in new ways, the new ways are usually dumbed down for console kiddies.... sorry I mean "more accessible" and/or not actually anything new, but just whatever is mainstream right now (for example the rumored new syndicate game... which will be a multiplayer focused FPS... because obviously we don't have enough of those right?)
1. Did you have to make that derisive comment about console players?
2. Yes some console ports are dumbed down sometimes to varying degrees but they are still fun to play in some cases....and not all reboots or sequels are this way.
3. It sounds fun....just because you don't want to play games that are "mainstream" or dumbed down doesn't mean they're not fun & I guess that's your loss.

Wow, that quote sounds like something Steve Ballmer would say. And that kinda, sums it up for me.

they should make more games that are so complex no one buys them except for a select hardcore. then, when they have to file for bankruptcy, we can raise our fists and yell "damn market, you don't understand anything". At least that will stop the "console kiddies" arguments.
The only thing new about Borderlands was the engine.

I distinctly remember playing a FPS game with loot drops and randomized equipment stats years before borderlands. it also had actual NPC dialogs, quest hubs, randomized areas so that you could replay it without doing the exact same thing every play though, multiple character classes, skill progression, and you could co-op the whole thing.

the only thing it didn't have that Borderlands does is Vehicles.

It's name was Hellgate: London.

Borderlands has much more random environs than Hellgate, imo...what with all it's subway/same buildings copy-pasted everywhere...plus all the book/multiplayer guild ads plastered all over the walls, breaking the immersion.
Hellgate didn't work out for a reason, well more than one ... but that still doesn't make Borderlands original.

Never said it was totally original, but it was fun as fuck......and AGAIN...no BLOODY ADS on the walls like in the tube stations in Hellgate, or the slow level load times/etc on max quality.

so, we only play original games then? awesome. small library I imagine.

Gersen: Innovation is nice... but you still need to make a good game out of it.

lukipela: The problem is that people seem to complain that the game isnt like other games, so...they are bitching that it is innovative.
No kidding, it's not like devs are going to hit it out of the park every time they try something new. And as many times as I hear "dumbed down for consoles" I swear I want to put them in front of Castlevania: Lords of Shadow and kick them in the nuts every time they die. The only problem with this plan is my leg would get tired.

Not every game has to be "super hardcore" and you don't have to love every sequel in a franchise. Duke Nukem is a great example, several Duke games are different styles of game.

Nothing about this game is innovative.

Which game are we talking about here ? Borderlands ?

IMHO Borderlands problem wasn't that is was "innovative" (I don't really see why it would be called "innovative" by the way) more that it felt like an offline MMO, it was fun for 2 or 3 hours to level up and pick up look but after it become very boring very rapidly. Maybe it's better in multi but given I only care about the solo part I will never know.

There is nothing wrong "bitching" about a game for being "different" if it's this different that makes it bad. (I am not talking about any game in particular)

The way in which they are combined and used in the Duke franchise is innovative.....not the seperate aspects.

Claptraps were funny, as was their DLC mission....also some of the characters and enemies made me literally lol as I played...both in how they looked & acted.

lukipela: I didnt like borderlands because they didnt change the scenery throughout the entire game.
It's a desert planet...what'd you expect? Sand temples and cityscapes?

Delixe: Just have a read of this
“You’re just missing out on an entire, ginormous aspect of video games history if you fail to participate. This game’s gonna ship and we’re all going to be there, so it doesn’t matter what the score is.”

“We know the game’s great. Any journalist that decides…to lowball it is gonna be held accountable by the readers.”

So yeah... I wasn't that impressed by the demo. I guess a lot of people will be on Gearbox's shitlist.
i was mighty impressed with the physics part. throwing barrels around. etc. woah.

actually, the movie at the end of the demo was quite good. but something tells me that these were the high points of the game :p
You mean that comment wasn't meant as a joke?
