I just expect more of what Duke has given me in the past. Anyone expecting some triple A, life altering game, has no idea what the Duke games have been about.......having fun.
The first reactions from the public will be the same as any other release. A small minority will love it (the majority who love it will be too busy playing to care enough to post on forums after all). And the vocal majority will call it utter shite, demand refunds and whine about how they wish they'd never wasted their time pre-ordering "this buggy piece of dumbed-down-for-consoles crap".

I personally blame my reaction on the fact that I've grown up. Duke3D seemed awesome back then. The new one? Not so much.
It was not a bad demo but I feel it was an old build because its the exact same demo that was at PAX last year I'm hoping the full game will be a little better. Besides from reading on Gearbox forums with people looking through the files of the Steam version it looks like it is a old build which hopefully means they've made some improvements to that section of the game and with the controls.

I'm still buying the Balls of Steel edition.
I managed to play the demo (barely, as my laptop is old and crawled through it) and for me the experience can be defined as great technology and shiny features ... from five years ago. You could tell the large environments would have been mind blowing back in the day, as well as the vehicle sequences. Too bad gaming already beat them to it years ago. Feature creep galore.

But if I had a PC that would be able to play it without issues then I would get this day one, because even with all the limitations imposed, and the late birth, for me, it's still Duke.

It figures you'd have one of the most level headed and rational responses to give on this matter...thanks again Bansama.
I feel the need to bump this for the sole reason of going:

Bwahahahahahahahahahahaha!

or

Ha-Ha!

... I'm not sure which is more fitting.

*edit* god damn it! I forgot this place doesn't let me post pictures.

*edit #3* oh fuck the picture links, I guess the Ha-Ha! is on me, how fucking hard would it be to put in a preview post button?

That's mature. Considering the reviews being good, I'm not sure why you're even bothering to post this crap here.

Apart from Joystiq bashing Duke for being Duke and completely ignoring the gameplay issues that might be there, I haven't seen any negative reviews so far.

The joystiq article in particular was written by somebody with no sense of history or understanding of the franchise. And based nearly entirely upon the "reviewers" personal tastes. Which is sad, people should be doing some research before doing a review covering the latest addition to a franchise, particularly one with such a long period of development.
The biggest WTF I have seen so far is IGNs "review"... Not really a review, just spew without even attempting to review the game as the guy didn't even play through it yet.

I'm personally fine with bad reviews if the reviewer thinks that it's warranted. But, I think reviews which are based primarily on morality and barely mention the game play don't do anybody any favors. If an element of the game play sucks, tell us what it is. I can forgive holding back examples if it might spoil the game for those that choose to play, but if you can't find at least a few specific examples to cite, then you probably shouldn't be doing the review.

read it and weep ... well, I guess you really wouldn't be "reading" it.

As I wrote in the Duke Nukem series forum here IGNs "review" takes the biscuit. That's why I stopped picking up games based on reviews online and/or in the mags.

Indeed, I have the feeling that part of what's going on here is that nobody paid the customary bribes to get positive reviews. I think that's what I'm seeing in some of these reviews where they aren't bad reviews in the conventional sense, they're bad reviews in that they aren't even reviews.

But, there's also the issue of people who seem to want the game to be a current game, when it sounds like it's more old school than that. Which is in some ways understandable, it was touted as being revolutionary. But the game was in production for a long time and probably is dated in some areas. But in a way it is, the environment is quite interactive, but the action itself is old school. For those that like that I think we're going to be happy.

Eventually, I think the game will end up here, assuming that they can get the rights to do it.
I know what you mean, I was a bit iffy after playing first 30 minutes and then went "hang on, why am thinking about this, let's just enjoy it". And so I did.

I can put this game above most of modern FPS shooters. Yes this can piss folk off and get them to attack me - so what?

If someone can't look at a game directly and keeps comparing it to everything else trying to impose their *opinion* as if it was a *fact* - that makes me sick. Not saying DNF is great and everybody should jump on the bandwagon but hey - this method can be applied to anything really. There are bits and bobs I don't like/could be done better or in different manner but I definitely am not feeling like Duke is dead for me. He is alive and kicking - through prism of the past.

On the same note - I don't think any review can be objective, we are only human and there is always going to be something personally influencing judgement one way or another...

QFT

I don't expect the reviews to be completely without any bias, but I do think that if they're going to criticize that they should at least try to do it on the basis of the game. What it is and whether or not it's worth playing.
